(Not an adoption, per se, but Gem is adopting in a snowstorm. Pearl is the mother at the orphanage. I had this idea because it's snowing where I live.)

I heard Pearl call us all downstairs. I sighed. Adoption day. Everyone always loved when someone came to adopt. Everyone always dressed their best. Not me. I wore an oversized hoodie and a pair of sweat pants. No one wanted me anyways. So why look nice, only to have them not look at you.

That's not all the reason that no one looked my way. It was because Pearl always tells them beforehand that I am selectively mute. I only talk to her and the younger kids that I took care of. Without knowing, she wrecks my chances. I rolled my eyes.

I just picked up a book about a beanstalk and started reading.

A couple of minutes later, someone knocked on my door. I thought that it was Pearl, but when I heard her speaking to a girl I recognized the voice of, I gasped.

I was a huge fan. Pearl opened the door and standing beside her is a girl with brown curly hair in two buns on the sides of her head.

I couldn't actually believe it. My idol was standing there. I waved politely. Gem turned to Pearl. "She's selectively mute. She'll talk only if she's comfortable with you. You just have to give her time." Pearl replied.

Gem nodded and smiled. "You know what? I'll adopt her. I want a girl anyways. And the other girls downstairs are kinda rude, not gunna lie. Besides, she's perfect." I gasped and smiled at her. Pearl nodded and went back downstairs with my new 'mom' to sign the papers while I packed.

Within an hour, Gem and I were heading to my new home. "I thought I would get to know you a bit more while we go shopping. Is that ok?" I turned to her and nodded.

She smiled even more. "Your name is Luci right?" I nodded again. "I like it. My favorite color is green. What about you?" I thought about it. Did I even have a favorite color? "Light purple." I replied. "I want to you be more comfortable with me. But I won't be too pushy. I won't force you to do anything you don't want to. Within reason, of course." When I laughed, she laughed along with me.

I knew I could finally be happy with Gem.

Gem stopped the car on the side of the road, waking me up from sleep. I looked over at her. "I can't see to drive so I guess we'll be staying here for a bit. I have a blanket in the trunk if you want to sit under it in the backseat with me?" She asked me.

I nodded and she got out to get the truck open and I climbed into the back.

"Here we go. I'll plug my phone into the aux cord so we can listen to some music. I don't know how long we would be here for." I nodded, telling her that was fine."

An hour later, the snow came down harder, but I was nice and warm, as much as you could be, in a car with my new mom with a blanket around us.

I couldn't have asked for a better mother.
