CHAPTER 1

IF MCKAYLA WAS being completely honest, she had no idea what Kate had in mind for holiday cheer. She followed her sister until she told her to hang back and wait for their friends.

The light snowfall and chilling breezes was enough to make her walk back home. The question McKayla had for her sister is "how is she not freezing?"

She watched as Kate climbed up the tall museum. Thank goodness their mother paid good money for their trainers. For a while she followed in her sister's footsteps, still in awe of the marvelous Hawkeye. Then she saw her first ballet and switched to dancing. She still picked up the bow every now and then but it didn't hold the same meaning anymore.

Jane and a friend came up behind her hugging their jackets tight. "Where is she?" McKayla pointed to the building.

"Call her phone." Jane instructed.

McKayla pulled her phone out of her pocket and dialed her sister's number. It only took two rings before she picked up. As soon as she did, McKayla put the phone on speaker.

"Katie, be careful. Mom will wring my neck if you get hurt." Her sister advised.

Jane leaned over her shoulder and added, "Also, if we get caught, you're definitely gonna be kicked off the archery team."

We heard Kate sigh from the other end. "Yeah, I know. But a bet's a bet, Greer. And Kayla, mom's hardly going to notice if I get hurt, she's too obsessed with Jack." McKayla rolled her eyes at her sister's statement.

"Okay, so the real question is; does the bell swing back and forth, or does the dangly thing swing back and forth?"

"Are you kidding me you seriously don't know this, Kate!?" Exclaimed her sister, "It's obviously the dangly thing in the middle that swings back and forth."

"I know that, Kayla. I'm just testing them."

McKayla scoffed. "Yeah right."

They watched as Kate hitched her bow and took her aim. "I know it's a bet," Started Jane, "But are you sure that arrow won't damage it?"

"No."

McKayla groaned. "Katie! Why are we here then?"

"It's a bet Kay, relax."

That didn't help one bit. But they kept watching Kate and her fancy arrows. She let go of the arrow and it flew through the air only to bounce off of the bell.
