I clutched the paper tightly in my hand. My face hurt from the smile that I've held in place willingly for the past hour. I stumbled out of the office in my two inch nude heels, still riding my high from the great news.
Dr.Laura had ordered blood tests to check my vitals, something I had been doing once a year since I could remember. Dr. Laura had been my family's doctor for over ten years and she's watched me grow up. Even now I can't stop thinking about her amazing news.
Dr. Laura walked in flipping through her chart. She came to a stop before me and gave me a great big smile. She pushed her glasses further up her nose and yelled, "Congratulations!"
"Congratulations?" I repeated confused, "on being healthy?"
"No, you're pregnant!" She yelled excitedly wrapping her arms around me.
I covered my mouth with my hand while I began to sob uncontrollably. I smiled through my tears, "I'm really pregnant?" I whispered.
"Yes," Dr. Laura confirmed holding onto my hand, "you're going to be a mother."
A strong arm wrapped itself around my torso gently easing me back on my feet after I slipped on the way out of the doctor's office. I turned around to thank my savior when my gratitude got momentarily stuck in my throat. It wasn't fair how chiseled his jaw was, how his dark black hair was gelled back to perfection, how his thick eyebrows were set above deep chocolaty eyes, or that his lips were so full people probably modeled their lip injections after him.
"Thank you," I said with gratitude trying to shake myself out of staring. I turned around and before I could take a step he grabbed firmly yet gently onto my arm and shivers ran down my spine. I looked to him waiting for him to let go and say something.
"Sorry," he apologized releasing his careful grip on my arm.
My phone began to vibrate so I wasted no time in digging through the pocket of my skirt to answer. All thoughts of my handsome savior were forgotten.
"Hello," a deep voice I had grown familiar to over two years greeted. I smiled and I felt my body loosen.
"Hi," I said dreamily into the phone.
"Could you meet me somewhere?" he asked. His voice was weird, a mix of remorse and something else I couldn't pin point at the moment.
"Sure, is everything alright?" I started to panic. I started biting my lower lip in nervousness, a habit I've had since I was a teenager.
I thought I heard a female voice over the phone but he rushed into the phone," The courthouse off of Boggs Boulevard, can you meet me here in an hour?"
"Sure," I replied my happiness levels only rising even more than what it was.
"Bye," he said before he hung up. I sighed content and ended the call on my side. I looked up noticing that the handsome stranger was still standing in front of me.
"Was there something you needed?" I asked not the least bit trying to be discreet about needing to leave in a hurry. I had to go home and get changed; I needed to look presentable if it was what I thought it was. I knew I should have used my manners but right now that was the last thing on my mind.
"No," he replied in a clipped tone and walked off. I stared at his back watching his retreating form. Then why wait for me to finish the conversation? I shoved my thoughts aside and rushed to the parking lot making sure not to trip this time.
"Hi Lily," I said stroking the hood of my car. I treasured my first ever car that my husband of two years, Tucker, had surprised me with a few months before our marriage. I hopped into my trustworthy vehicle and zoomed home which was only five minutes away from my doctor's office.
