Phone Calls

The next morning I woke to my phone ringing. I groggily got up and answered the phone.

“Hello,” my voice answered croakily. I headed towards the kitchen to get some water for my dry throat.’

“Is this Sophia?” the voice on the other line asked.

“This is she,” I answered. I filled a glass cup with water and took a long drink from it.

“This is Lilian,” oh the girl from the condos, “are you willing to raise the price anymore for the condo?”

Condo? What is she-oh the condo Griffin wants to buy.

“Um no. Unfortunately that’s a little too out of my price range.”

“Pity,” Lilian said, “well I hope you have a nice day and if you want to look at any more condos please contact me,” then she rattled off a number I was too tired to write down.

“Thanks Lilian.”

I hung up the phone and leaned against the counter. I felt way better than I did yesterday but my stomach was still bothering me. I sunk down to the floor and pressed my warm forehead onto the cool refrigerator. I decided that I would have to go to the doctor’s office soon to see what was happening.

I picked up my phone and looked in my contacts for Dr. Snuff. That wasn’t really his name but I called him that because he had a really big nose and he confessed to me that he used to get high off of chemicals. Oh well look where he is now.

I heard the ring of the telephone and a deep voice answered the phone.

“Samantha?” I asked. Samantha was the usual secretary for the doctor’s office. She must have caught a very nasty cold the poor thing.

I heard a short laugh before someone corrected me, “No this is Sam, Samantha’s brother. I’m filling in for her.”

“Oh ok.”

“Was there something I could help you with Miss…”

“Sophia,” I told him. I yawned I felt so tired.

“Um can I make a doctor’s appointment?” My mind whirled and I heard clicking sounds on the other line.

“Sure. When would you like to meet with your doctor?” Sam asked. He patiently waited for my reply.

“When is he available?”

“Let me check,” a couple more clicks before Sam told me, “he’s free this Friday afternoon.”

I counted in my head. Today was Wednesday. I could hold until Friday. I nodded my approval before I forgot I was on the phone and Sam couldn’t see me.

“That’ll be great!” I drank a little bit more water.

“Ok will 2:30 work for you mam?”

“Please Sophia darling and yes that time will work.”

“Alright I’ll just schedule you in and if you ever need an emergency visit Miss please come in right away,” he warned.

“Ok thanks,” and I hung up the phone.

Right now I was feeling ridiculously weak. Was this morning sickness? I crawled back to my room because my legs couldn’t support me. I laid in bed and tried to go over Griffin’s offer again.

Was I doing the right thing? I couldn’t stay in bed any longer. I didn’t like wasting time so I rolled myself off of bed and into the bathroom. I stripped myself and turned on the shower. I was hoping a shower would wake me up and do me some good but it didn’t do anything.

Approximately ten minutes later I heard my phone ringing. I turned off my shower and wrapped the towel around me. I clumsily walked towards the ringing and the caller id was unknown.

“Hello?”

“Listen here and listen here good bitch,” a hateful girly voice said.

“I think you have the wrong number,” I responded.

“No,” she spat, “I want you to stay away from Tucker. If I even hear-“

I cut her off, “Hold up. Don’t you know we’re getting divorced?” Damn stupid kids these days messing with sick pregnant women.

“I know that you idiot. I’m just saying you better stay away from him or else,” she threatened.

I wasn’t exactly in the mood for this kind of crap especially not crap concerning my soon to be ex, “Listen you dumb schoolgirl. I don’t want Tucker back. You can have him for all I care. Once we finalize the divorce I don’t want to even hear that ass’ name anymore.”

“Good that’s all I wanted to know,” she told me.

“Look you seem,” like a nice girl? Not really since she called me here to make threats over a stupid boy, “you seem young. Here’s some good advice. If he left me he’s gonna leave you. Don’t waste time on that guy, he’s not worth it,” I told her truthfully. I realized it was the truth. Tucker didn’t deserve to be happy after leaving his baby mamma. I hung up the phone.  Good advice, deed for the day, check.

I wasn’t anxious on joining the maternity world and all the clothes it had to offer so I slipped on a pair of jeans a normal plain t-shirt. Today was not about impressing anyone.

Then my annoying phone started ringing again. Ugh! This better not be the jealous for nothing girl I thought.

“Hello?” My voice was starting to take on a slightly raspy quality. I need water.

“Yes is this Sophia?” I blocked out the last name.

“Yes,” I answered warily. Today it seemed like a great day to call and disturb the pregnant lady.

“Hi, my name is Sharon Williams and I represent Tucker,” she let that sink in for a moment before continuing, “my client would like to meet with you officially to go over details of the divorce and the dividing of the assets.” I think she was asking for my permission. Right now I wasn’t sure if I should have said, “To hell with all this,” and let that no good pretty boy take everything or sue him for all he’s worth.

Instead I asked, “Is this allowed by the judge?”

There was hesitation before Sharon spoke again, “It is allowed but what will be decided today may reappear in court and hopefully shorten the divorce process,” she had me at that last part.

“Okay. I’ll go. What time and place?” The faster the divorce the faster I could be with Griffin. Whoa! Stop! Griffin isn’t supposed to mean anything. He’s just a guy you’re gonna marry to help the both of us. I looked down at my stomach. Remember it’s not for love.

Calling me up to talk about the divorce was a little unexpected but I guess Tucker wanted to get it over with ASAP so he can be with his little high school girl.

She rattled off a firm that was thirty minutes away and we were meeting in three hours. I asked her if I need legal aid and she said it wasn’t necessary. All I knew was that I wasn’t going to sign anything.

The best thing to do from here was call Griffin. For some reason I found comfort in contacting him. I dialed the number for his office and his nice assistant answered. She grudgingly told me that Griffin was in a meeting but would be out soon. I had told her that was alright. I just asked her if she could leave him a message saying that I was going to talk over legal matters with my ex and I left the name of the firm and Mrs. William’s name and contact info. The assistant politely said she would, I said thanks, and then I hung up.

Looks like it was time to get glammed up and show Tucker how well I was doing without him by my side.
