They should put a few more street lights on the highway back home, Annaleigh thinks. The hum of the radio and the noise of the car engine are the only sounds to keep her company. Outside the car, the winter cold created a layer of ice on the asphalt. As she drives she thinks about what smile Ava will make when she sees the gift she bought her, she knows she will be thrilled. She finds herself smiling at that thought. Sometimes Annaleigh wonders how she could live in a world without Ava, without her little sister. The lights of the city are moving further and further away and the street has been completely engulfed in darkness. Did mom and dad really have to choose to live in the countryside? She reflects to herself, a moment before the radio suddenly loses its signal. Annaleigh doesn't have time to tune her again as she doesn't see a car coming towards her.
