A cat ... it's just a cat. He closes my eyes with a sigh of relief. A cat with a thick black fur stares me straight in the eye, while occasionally launches some sporadic gentle meowing.
-Ehm..hello- I say not knowing exactly what to do, while his two yellow eyes continue to scrutinize me. Suddenly he begins to advance with feline grace, until he rubs himself on my legs purring, and then jumps and snuggles up on one of the stools on either side of the islet in the center of the kitchen. I take a seat on the one next to it, placing the jar of biscuits and the cappuccino on the marble surface. I find it almost unthinkable that Ash could feel affection for an animal, or just affection.
-Not always everything is as it seems-
From fright I jump from the stool, falling to the floor.
-Do you speak?! - I exclaim incredulously looking at the cat.
-No, no, I'm going crazy- I keep babbling with a hysterical chuckle.
The cat stretches, then jumps onto the islet and watches me from top to bottom.
-Yes, I imagined it could have this effect- he says in a male voice.
He continues to look into his eyes with a hallucinated expression.
-Have you never seen a cat in your life darling? -He says annoyed seeing that I don't say a word.
- Certainly not one who speaks - I reply just as crossly as I get up from the ground and sit back on the stool.
Now the cat is in front of me.
-How do you talk? In short, how is it possible? - I still ask incredulously, I have to get used to all the oddities and things that I thought impossible.
Suddenly spirals of dark mist envelop him until he disappears and then appears next to me in the form of ... human.
-Heart, you've met a demon, are you really still surprised? - says the boy next to me, leaning his elbow on the marble shelf to support his head. A smirk is painted on his face that leads him to gently curl his lips. Light brown curls fall on his forehead, long to the eyes with a sweet shape, but a deep yellow, like that of the animal he embodied a little while before.
-Yes well, I hoped the surprises were over- I say sarcastically raising my eyebrows and bringing the cappuccino to my lips.
He laughs softly.
-I am a shadow, a memory- he says in a lower tone of voice, while his gaze is lost in an imaginary point.
I turn to look at him, but before he can open his mouth he precedes me.
-I can change shape, I'm inconsistent here- he explains touching his arm, but I don't feel anything, his hand goes through my limb dissolving in dark dust for a moment. I look stunned at the scene.
-The positive side is that I don't have the needs that humans have- he says almost to himself.
-What's your name? I mean, do you have a name? - I ask him a little embarrassed, but I find him nice.
-Sure I have it, it's Jasper- he says with a grin.
-Oh well, I'm ...-
-Ava- precedes me.
-I am a shadow, I know many things- He explains pleased to then get up from the stool and go to the French window in the living room.
-Do you all have the habit of interrupting people while they talk here? - I say rolling my eyes.
Jasper chuckles, rolling the sleeves of his gray shirt around his elbows. He is wearing an elegant burgundy vest which gives him an old-fashioned yet refined look. While his legs are wrapped in gray velvet trousers.
-Have you admired the view yet? -He asks, nodding his head towards the key on the coffee table in front of the sofa.
I get off the stool and leave the now empty cup of cappuccino in the sink.
-No, not yet- I say grabbing the key and heading towards the French window.
I put the key in the lock and turn. The lock clicks, which gives me a sigh of relief. I lower the handle and open one of the shutters of the imposing window, going out. The morning breeze hits me with uplifting violence. I take big breaths, filling my lungs with fresh air. The wind blows a few strands of the chignon. I close my eyes as I savor that little sense of freedom that I can feel. My lips curl into a smile. I lean on the stone parapet and look down. London is in the middle of its life, Big Beng in the distance towers over it, marking the time. I had never seen it from such a high point. I feel Jasper's presence materialize next to me.
"They can't see us," he says.
-How? - I say confused.
-Normal people can't see this building, up to two days ago you weren't able to do it either, before you became immortal- he explains looking towards the horizon.
-Does anyone else live there? - I ask.
-No, we are the only ones, there are not even other apartments in the building, it is an illusory form- she concludes.
-Are you a memory of whom? - I ask suddenly, turning to Jasper. But when I turn around I can't find anyone, he's gone.
