My father and I stumbled through the rocks in the crevasse between two giant mountains. We had been traveling with minimal food and water for three days with about a combined four hours of sleep throughout the entire journey. Every muscle in my body was sore and pleading for a rest and some nourishment.
"How much longer 'till we get there?" I ask my father gasping for breath as I set my heavy backpack down.
"No time for rest, I'm sorry Cici. We are almost there, I promise," he says sincerely as he places my backpack back into my hands. We were forced to leave our home after my father got into some bad business with even worse people and we had to either leave or be killed. My father still refuses to tell me the whole story but I know it must be awful if we had to leave.
After about thirty more minutes of trekking between the mountains and through a stream, we came upon the back of a very big and colorful house. My father sighed and smiled at the house as we walked around it to the front door.
"Remember what I told you about, this family is very different from the ones back home," he says to me tucking a piece of my hair behind my ear. I give him a tired smile as he knock on the front door. It immediately swings open and the tiles roll under our feet bringing us inside and causing me to fall landing hard on my back. I wince as my dad quickly grabs my arm and hauls me off the floor.
"Leave me here to die," I groan as he pulls me off the tiles.
"Stop being dramatic," he says through a forced smile. I regain my feet and an older woman appears at the top of the stairs and looks at us with confusion.
"Are you the Connors?" she asks as she starts to descend the stairs.
"Yes, yes we are. Is Agustin here?" my father asks as he begins to set his bag down. suddenly we hear a loud clatter from the other room and I see a tall man with glasses stumbles out from around the corner. "Agustin!" my dad yells as he starts to run towards the man I'm guessing is Agustin.
"Richard!" the man yells and runs towards my dad before embracing him. They pull away and start to talk to each other. As they do, I watch as another woman in a blue dress covered in flour appear from the same corner. She is very pretty and carrying a plate of biscuit looking cake things.
"My names Julieta, Agustin's my husband. You look so tired, please take an arepa." she says with a gentle tone as I cautiously take an arepa. I thank her quickly before I shove the arepa in my mouth. Suddenly, a wave of comfort and warmth wash over my body as soon as it touches my tongue. I stare at the half eaten arepa in my hands.
"How-" I can't even finish my sentence I'm so dumbfound. Julieta just smiles and places another arepa in my hand before walking over to my dad still catching up with Agustin. I quickly devour both arepas and feel the most relief I've felt in weeks. Suddenly a large cloud grows over our heads and the winds pick up. I start to move back towards the front door but Julieta just laughs and cups her hands to her mouth, yelling,
"Pepa! Calm down we have guests, you're scaring them!" suddenly a woman with long red hair in a bright yellow dress peaks out from around the corner.
"Oh, sorry, sorry It's just- Antonia is a mess because Dolores heard a rat scurrying around the nursery and Mirabel said she would kill it if she saw it in her bed and he got really upset. Anyways I'm Pepa, I'm sorry for scaring you," she waves her hands in the air shooing away the hovering cloud. Then she extends her hand out to me. I shook her hand as a shorter, darker man walked out from where Pepa came from.
