CHAPTER 5: THE MADNESS OF TRUE DESPAIR (DEADLY LIFE)

"Oh my god." Emily squeaked.

At once, the bangles around their hands unlocked and clattered to the floor.

"WHAT THE FUCK?" Ide yelled.

Horiuchi moved forward as a thumping from the stairs caught his attention. Jennifer had rushed upstairs, followed by Kenjari. Ikari followed a minute later.

"Who-" Kenjari began.

"It's Ouchi." Chino said quietly.

"You're joking." Ikari said.

Rano shook his head. "Well, we have to investigate."

[INVESTIGATION: START!]

Horiuchi moved over to the body that lay against the ground, pulling out his handbook.

The victim is Ouchi Haruko, the Ultimate Actress.

Time of death was 10:47 am.

The victim was found in the Third Floor Art Room at 10:55 am.

The cause of death was repeated strikes to the head with a blunt object, however a specific kind of poison seemed to be injected into the body.

Horiuchi tucked his notebook away before moving forward. His attention was caught by something on the floor. A bloody sculpting hammer lay on the ground.

Someone tapped him on the shoulder, and he turned to see Ide standing there.

"What is it?"

"Us four have alibis." Ide said. "You, me, Em, and Rano. We all heard the scream and came downstairs."

Horiuchi nodded. "That takes out half of us as suspects."

Horiuchi moved over to Jennifer.

"Jen, do you have an alibi?" Horiuchi asked.

"I do not. I came here directly from my room when I heard the discovery announcement. However, I saw Kenjari leave his as well before heading up here."

"Okay." Horiuchi moved over to Rano.

"Hey, I know we have airtight alibis, but I just wanna make sure. What was your NG code?" Rano asked. "Something about touching?"

"Couldn't make contact with anyone." Horiuchi said. "I didn't know whether I could do it through weapons though. Didn't test it."

Rano nodded. "Okay, just making sure."

Horiuchi moved back to the body, and looked down at it. Ouchi's mouth was wide open, and her left hand was a dark purplish color. Her left eye was red and bleeding, and her NG bracelet was beeping. Her gold bracelet was also missing.

Horiuchi stood up. "So she must have forgotten about it."

He looked around. The entire room was disheveled, as if there was a struggle.

Horiuchi moved once more to examine her body. She was sprawled against the wall, seemingly sunk to the floor as she died. Something else lay in her hand. A kitchen knife. She probably grabbed it for self-defense, or even from her killer.

Horiuchi sighed and stood up.

However, the intercom blared once more.

"Attention students! The fifth Class Trial is ready to begin! Everyone, please proceed to the elevator on the first floor." Monokuma said.

"We got less time to investigate than last time. This is going to be tricky." Rano said to him as they all headed down into the elevator.

It was like all the other class trials, except something was missing. As usual. Ouchi was missing. She was gone, her life snuffed out by this brutal killing game. A victim.

And their killer was in the room.

Once they arrived at the elevator, no words were spoken as it traveled down into the courtroom, no words said as they all approached their podiums and took the stand.

Ouchi's podium now had a portrait with a hammer on it, bonking her on the head, and her eyes were covered with pink lines.

Horiuchi gripped the wood of his podium so hard his pale skin turned an even brighter white, like alabaster.

We're going to get justice, Ouchi. For you. And your family.

"Welcome, welcome, welcome again!" Monokuma said. "It's time you begin your fifth class trial!"
