CAROLINE POV:

As I slowly wake from my slumber I feel quite strange.

Lately I have been feeling emotionally drained but the type of tiredness that I now feel is much more physical. As a vampire I can get tired but usually recover quite fast but right now, it reminds me of when I was still human.

The alarm goes of and the incessant ringing of it does not help my already poor mood. I stretch out my arm towards the noise and slap the stupid thing. With a light thump it falls down on the carpeted floor. Another detail that I find weird. I have wooden floors in my house so the noise should have been much louder. I shrug it off as I cannot be bothered with anything before I have had a coffee.

I take a deep breath and exhale loudly, making the hair that fell on my face, flutter. Slowly but surely I start sitting up and move the hair away from my face. I crack open my eyes and look around. As I said, I haven't had my coffee yet so it takes a bit of time for my brain to catch up to what I am seeing. I just sit in the bed looking around for a few minutes. Only to realize that I am not in my bedroom. I know where I am but it should not be possible. After my mothers death, I sold the house and moved to another home. So how can I be back and how in the world could I be in my hold room with all my stuff?

Everything looks exactly the same as back then. I get off the bed, walk around and touch some items along the way. When I enter the bathroom I look into the mirror and then I see it. I have acne on my face, bags under my eyes, moreover I feel hunger but different from the usual bloodlust. This type of hunger is one I had long forgotten, hunger for real food. Oh my god, what is happening? How can this be? I can't hear, see or smell as usual. All my senses have been dulled down and the tiredness I feel doesn't go away. How in the world did I become human again? I did not take the cure, so why?

I hear a knocking on my door, "Caroline honey, wake up you need to get ready for your first day in high school!"

That voice! I look at the door baffled and incredulous. Teary-eyed I take shaky steps towards the door. With trembling hands I grab the handle. I inhale deeply and hesitantly open it. On the other side of the door is a sight I could never before hope to see again.

"Mom." My voice catches. With widened eyes I look at my mother, some tears escape my eyes. I can't help it, so much time has passed since I had last seen her. Throughout the years my memory of her had been slowly fading. Her face started to blur, as well as her voice, so seeing her again standing in front of me I could not help but cry.

"Oh Caroline, what is it? Why are you crying" she asks me with a startled expression.

By now I am bawling my eyes out and cannot get a word out. As any normal, half-way sane person would do I embrace her in a much needed hug.

She hugs be back and tries to comfort me, "it's alright honey. It's alright."

After some time I let her go and wipe away my tears with my hands. I look at her with reddened eyes.

"Mom. Mommy..."

"What is it honey? Did you have a nightmare? Tell me."

We separate a little and she brushes back the hair that is blocking my view. She caresses my face and wipes away a few tears.

"I-Is this real? A-Are you r-real? Please tell me. Please tell me that I am not imagining this.", I cry out.

"Of course it is. I am as real as you." She embraces me again.

"Tell me what happened that got you so upset?"

My breathing is erratic and the occasional hiccup makes an appearance. I take a deep breath and start analyzing my situation. My old bedroom, the hunger for food, the dulled senses and my mother standing in front of me. It sounds incredible, it looks incredible but stranger things have happened. This is Mystic Falls. Vampires, Werewolves, Hybrids and other creatures exists.
