Chapter Eleven

“Hey mamacita” said Eliza running up behind me.

            “Hey girl”

“What’s up with you, you been MIA lately.”

            “It’s Travis.”

Eliza took out her phone and started punching in numbers.

“What do you mean its Travis? Is he controlling and ain’t letting you hang out with nobody, because if he is I can easily call up my boys and we can beat his-“

“No, no it’s not that.” I said cutting her off.

“Then what’s going on Jasmine? It’s like every weekend you’ve been busy talking to Travis, he doesn’t even want to hang out with you, and you don’t find that a little strange?”

            “He has practice.”

“Practice for what? School’s almost out.”

I began to feel angry, ever since Travis came here 3 weeks ago everyone has been trying to find something negative about him. If they gave him a chance and got to know the real him like I did, then they would know he really isn’t like all the other guys at Lakebay High.

            “We are starting to talk.”

“Like you guys going out now?”

“No we just spend a lot of time on the phone together. I learned so much about him, he’s real down to earth. I feel like I can talk to him about anything. When I talk to him I get all happy inside. I feel like he’s my best friend, the only one I can trust, and the only one I can talk to.” I looked over at Eliza and her expression changed. Her face was bright red, and twisted up in a scowl the way it always is when she’s mad.

“Damn Jasmine I’m glad I know how you really feel. You trust some nigga you’ve known for 3 weeks more than you trust me and we supposed to be sisters. You been MIA for the longest, you’re pushing all your friends away since you met him. It’s like I don’t even know you.”

“What about ya’ll? Every weekend I try to call and ask to hang out but everybody is always busy. You can’t try to make it seem like the reason we haven’t been the same is my entire fault.”

“That’s because you only trying to be bothered with us when Travis is not around. You’re starting to act real fake. It’s like you’d be cool with us one minute we would be talking and laughing like we always do, then you’d see Travis and act like we not there. Don’t ask what’s wrong with us when you the one being a fake slut.”

I stood there frozen, not knowing what to say or do. I tried to speak but it felt like there was a lump placed in the middle of my throat preventing me from speaking.

“Look, I didn’t mean to call you out your name, but I’m just pissed off at the way you’re acting. I don’t know if you noticed it or not, but you’re just not the same. You may think Travis is the best thing that’s happened to you but in reality he might not be. You should consider getting to know the real him before it’s too late. You might not see it now, but the same people you’re pushing away might be the people you’ll end up needing. Don’t come to “You girls” when you’re left alone and confused. Make sure Travis is always going to be there to hold you when you cry.”

As I watched her walk into class, all I could think about was why everybody couldn’t see what I saw in Travis. If they would just give him a chance they’d see why I’m so head over heels for him. I guess I could be moving too fast but he’s not even my boyfriend yet. All we’re doing is talking. People are always so quick to judge someone without getting to know their true identity. Thank god I’m not as judgmental as the rest. I walked into class and found a desk on the side of my soon to be boyfriend.
