Chapter Seventeen
I walked into the house and noticed my mom was sitting at the end of the couch waiting for me. As I walked closer to her I noticed she had been crying. It pained me to see my mother cry, but at least I hadn’t done anything but give Travis a few kisses.
“Where have you been Jasmine?” Something was different about the way she talked; she didn’t have her usual tone of voice.
“Just out with some friends.” I said nonchalantly walking upstairs to my room.
She took a deep breath and said “Ima ask you this one more time. None of your friends drive, so who were you with.”
I walked down stairs, sat as far away from the coach as possible and decided I’d tell the truth. “I know you don’t want me dating but there’s this guy his name is Travis and he asked me out today. He’s different from other guys, he treats me with respect, and every time we’re together he doesn’t mention anything about sex.”
“How do you know him?”
“He goes to my school.”
“Is this the same little boy who was walking you to school that one day?”
“No this is a different guy, he’s way better than Dontae ever could be. Dontae was up front about only wanting to have sex, but I can tell sex isn’t the only thing on Travis’s mind.”
“How are you so sure?”
“I can tell by the way he looks at me, the look in his eyes lets me know he really loves me.”
“Has he ever told you that?”
“Yeah, all the time.” I said smiling.
“He’s told you he loves you, but yet you’ve only been dating for a day. I don’t know about you, but I don’t believe that at all.”
I sat there in silence. She had a point but I just didn’t want to admit it.
“Sometimes as young girls we can become gullible and fall for anything our “Boyfriends” tells us. Just because he said he loves you, doesn’t mean he meant it. Some guys will tell you absolutely anything to get in your pants. I know you don’t want to believe it, but that’s just the way it is. Most guys your age don’t want a serious relationship, they want sex and if you don’t want to give it up, they move on to the nest girl hoping she will. I’m not trying to make you think all guess are the same, because they aren’t. Some guys do care, but you probably won’t find guys like that in your high school. I know what I’m telling you might be going through one ear and out the other. I just want you to remember I love you. I might nag a little too much, but that’s only because I care. If you decide to have sex I hope you make sure he uses protection, too many things can go bad just because you think you know someone.”
She got up and walked away leaving me there to think about everything she said. I know my mom is just trying to protect me. What kind of mother would she be if she didn’t care if I was having sex or not? I’m grateful I have a mom who cares, but there comes a time when she has to let me make my own decisions. You live and you learn. I think it’s time for her to take 10 steps back and let me live my life.
