CHAPTER 3 - PETTY AND PETTIER
"The number you are trying to reach has been disconnected."
She stared at the screen displaying the little battery she had left. More importantly: she stared at the internet she had. Or lack thereof. The call she attempted to make didn't work, and right when she had hope that maybe she'd get through, she heard that message again. The message she got tired of hearing.
Tae set down a pile of logs they couldn't use, shuffling on his feet until he sat across from her. She chose not to question his motives, rather she kept her eyes on her phone. "Anything?" he asked. It took several hours for her phone to even turn on, and all that just for no signal. All that to hear the torturous words that beat her mind to a pulp over and over again, every day.
"Nothing," she said, placing the phone in her pocket in case they needed its function later. Whatever function it had left, that was.
"Well, this is great. We're trapped here with barely any food and salt water. How the hell do we do this?" he asked.
"If we wanted to take risks, inside the wreckage there may be water bottles. Can't promise they won't be compromised, but I don't know how to craft a makeshift water filter. Do you?"
He shook his head. "The wreckage will be tough to navigate through. Probably scary too seeing all those..." Tae let his voice trail off, averting his eyes to the outline of the wreckage scarcely visible due to the night sky. "But we can try in the morning. It'll be worse at night. We'll have to go together."
"You'll watch my back?" she asked, masking the amazement she felt.
"I'll try to, if that's any comfort."
Y/n didn't press any further, rather she helped align the logs around the rock circle they set up. She didn't question if he knew how to do this. She certainly didn't, and it didn't help that the logs were too damp. He glanced at her, her covering the gash on her neck when she felt his eyes on it. "That from the crash?" he asked.
She nodded. "That and the massive headache that hasn't gone away yet. Had to wash this nasty gash while you were unconscious. I hope it's not infected."
"That would certainly change things."
Y/n turned to him, scanning her eyes over his body. "What about you? Any massive injuries I should know about?"
"I think my adrenaline has been too high to feel anything, but I have a headache too. I'm guessing we both have concussions, I've been dizzy all day."
Come to think of it, her vision had been fading in and out the last couple hours. Her head was spinning too. Concussion, alright. They were lucky to not have any broken bones, but Y/n had a decent proportion of her hair cut when she escaped the wreckage, not to mention her clothes were half-shredded thanks to the impact. Taehyung was the same way, so at least she wasn't alone in that regard. If her clothes fell off, that was yet another problem she'd have to deal with. The last thing she desired was to survive on an island such as this without clothes. Oh, and with a stranger staring at her naked body. It'd be nice to avoid that.
"We're probably going to be here for a bit," he said, resting a hand on his knee. "Maybe we should get to know each other."
"Not interested, but I appreciate you trying."
"So what, am I just a business partner to you or something?"
She shifted her eyes to the horizon, admiring the hues etched across the sky. If there was one thing she always had, it was the sky. Her office was always on the top floor just so she could be closer to it. It was an old saying that the sky's the limit, and in her business world, it was said often. Maybe that was why, or maybe she liked the colors. Maybe both.
