Sibling or sib: to keep it gender neutral

Sans and Papyrus were lovely brothers.
At least most of the time.
But troublesome none the less.

As a middle child, you had to endure quite a lot with them. Especially with Sans's laziness and Papyrus's tendency to being way to loud.
You loved them to bits and pieces, and yet...

"WOWIE!", your tall, lanky brother exclaimed as he spotted you walking through Snowdin.
"I AM SO GLAD TO FINALLY SEE YOU AGAIN, SIBLING!"

Just as your brothers, you had been working for the Guard, and in such a position, you have got you fair share of battle scars.

But your worst wound ever, you received while trying to protect a little human child, but Sans, of all people Sans, had snatched their soul and brought it to the King.

It had broken your heart.

Heh.

For years ever since, you had kept your distance from your brothers, not wanting to face them anymore.
Papyrus surely was disappointed, because you had left the guards after basically committing treason.

And Sans... Well.

He hadn't told your superiors, about what you had tried to do.
But still... He surely was about as warm about you as you were about him.

"I'M SO GLAD!"
Papyrus rushed at you and gave you a bone crushing hug.

"Huh?"

"SANS TOLD ME, YOU WERE SO BADLY HURT, THAT YOU HAD TO QUIT THE GUARDS AND STAYED IN THE CAPITAL, UNTILL YOU WERE HEALED!", he babbled excitedly while almost lifting you from your feet and swaying around with you lodged in his arms.

"Oh?", you muttered, still only slowly progressing his words under all the movement and noise he made.

"WILL YOU STAY WITH US AGAIN? WHAT AM I ASKING?! OF COURSE YOU ARE!"

And off you were dragged to their cozy little house at the edge of town.

Papyrus talked and talked and talked on and on about everything that he usually did and about how much he wanted to capture a human and how much Sans annoyed him with his puns and...

He made you taste his spaghetti, (of course you were to kind to be honest about the horrible taste, but at least requested for him to avoid the glitter next time) showed you around in the house, asked you to scare of a little white dog...

"bro? are we having a guest?"

Your eyesockets widened and teeth snapped shut in the middle of a short answer, you stared to the front door, where Sans just had appeared.

His gaze fell on you and the lights of his eyes faded for a moment, before he started to grin widely.

"if it isn't y/n! you finally got your bones together again?"

"THEY ARE QUITE ALRIGHT AGAIN, SANS! I'LL GET YOU TWO SOME MORE SPAGHETTI!"

And off Papyrus was, making a lot of noise in the kitchen.

"I... I was just passing by, as he spotted me...", you tried to explain quietly.

But Sans just shrugged and plopped down on the couch next to you.

"i don't really care, as long he will never hear the truth. it would be bone breaking for him."

He waved you off, then gave you a smile.
"im kinda glad you're here... you see..."
He looked towards kitchen for a moment.

"pap is still way more trusting than you ever were... so i try to protect him. everything for the family...", he mumbled.

Something weighted heavily on him, you could see it, as his grin dropped and his eyes went empty.

"the kid back then..."

You clenched your fist, not wanting to hear this.

"i've watched them. they killed, sib. and already had their weapon ready to strike you as well, as soon you weren't of use anymore..."

Staring at him empty eyesocketed, you didn't find any words.

"believe me, or not, but... you know..."
He gestured towards the kitchen.

"anyway... welcome home, sib!"

After this, he seemed to have enough of serious topics and assaulted you with a series of puns, until even your tension finally faded away.

Bones were stronger than in this house, as you finally were able to learn that day.

An: Thank you charliwarlie for suggesting siblings as thematic.
This is most likely only the first scenario I will do for this topic. Also this little story line might get a continuation as well.
This was merely the first idea that popped into my mind.

I hope I can manage more between work, gaming and world building in near future~
