Ruth was doing the dishes and watched through the window as her daughter Helen ran around the yard chasing after Jamie's dog,
"Have you told John yet?" Ruth turned to her brother who was helping her in surprise
"Told him what?"
Jaimie rolled his eyes "Come on sis, you know what I'm talking about.. I was your partner remember? I know you better then I know myself... Congrats!"
Ruths eyes were wide "Hush!"
"Ah so you havent told him."
She sighed looking away "No, I haven't."
"Why?"
She growled "Its none of your business."
Her brother watched her for a second, before he walked forward wrapping her in his arms
"I know its hard sis, this life, but its all we have, its all John knows. ... Just tell him."
"Mommy! Daddy's homes!"
Ruth turned and smiled when she saw her husbands car pulling into the driveway. James watched as the couple reunited, as his niece jumped into her fathers arms and was twirled in the air.
John noticed him and smiled"James."
"John...." James watched him silently for a second, their relationship was the most stilted in the family. "I'll leave you guys alone."
Ruth shook her head "Please stay for dinner... I know with Liz gone you wont make yourself any."
James looked to John who nodded "Yeah, stay... I know how it is to be without your wife."
So James stayed and later as Ruth was putting Helen to bed, he decided to have a long over due conversation with jim.
"How was the job?"
John shrugged "I got it done."
James rolled his eyes "You can't keep doing this.. Your a father now John you need to remember that you have something to come home to."
John frowned "You think I dont know that?"
"Look its been my job to protect my sister since I was eight years old okay... Now its your job, yet I still find myself at your house watching out for them." He stood as he heard his sister coming back "Think about what I said John."
With that he kissed his sister, said goodbye and left leaving John behind trying to figure out why he was just now telling him this."
