the first rule of fight club is

(AN: so this originally stressed me out because of how much it strayed from canon. it is a bit much for me, but i had fun writing this chapter so pls enjoy xoxo)

I look at the lineup for the first round. I'm up against some random guy from 1B. I don't even know his quirk.

Before I know it, I'm stepping into the ring while Present Mic is announcing our names.

The first thing I notice is that this kid is nervous. Like, heart beating so loud you can feel it in your throat nervous.

He was one wrong move from dropping out. Could I help out that process by increasing his heart rate? Yes. But I don't want to take that chance.

So I do the only reasonable thing. I knock him out.

"And without even moving a muscle, Maris Moore advances to the next round! Will she have it in her to fight all her matches like this?"

Hey, I appreciate the sentiment, but I really doubt I will.

I step back to watch the rest of the matches of this round.

I just hope whoever I go against next is a bit more fun.

Ibara Shiozaki.

Before this festival, I barely knew who she was. All I knew is that her hair was pretty cool.

Now, I know she's the girl that took Denki out extremely fast. Honestly, that match made me giggle a little when I watched it.

I guess this is karma.

Stepping into the ring, the fear of God coursed through my body.

Her heart is beating steady, showing no signs of fear.

Once the match begins, she immediately turns her back towards me. Before I could even make a move, I'm wrapped up in vines and suspended above the ground.

A sharp pain courses through my chest.

"She's immobilized—but the match isn't over!! Let's see what other tricks Moore has up her sleeve!!"

Midnight looks ready to step in at any moment. I slow Shiozaki's heartbeat slower than I did last round, but still fast enough that the vines fall and I drop to the ground in an instant.

Hearing a tear and feeling something drag across my skin when the vines pull away, I look down. It must've been thorns caught on my chest because now it's soaked in red. Two cuts, right from the bottom of my left collarbone to the middle of my chest.

The crowd hesitates before cheering starts. I smile for a second, trying not to look like I'm in pain. I back out into the locker rooms.

Kiri is on his way out of the guys' locker room as I open the door for the girls'. He stops to congratulate me but all I can muster is a small 'thanks' before running to my bag.

I originally planned to go to Recovery Girl. But, as soon as I shut the locker room door, my head started spinning and my vision started tunneling.

That's not the worst part. The worst part is that my heart rate started dropping significantly. Which means my drawback is happening.

I have to delay it as much as I can. I'll be lucky if I win this next round. I focus all of my quirk into making my heart rate normal.

I grab the first aid kit I packed in case of this exact situation and sit on the bench.

Before I open up my kit, I try to tie my hair up. hands trembling, I pull it into a ponytail, and the bottom half just falls out because it's too short. A detail I always forget.
