When Nita was very small, they told her about her parents. They had been on a gathering trip. Her father had only gone along to protect her mother. Their bodies were found a few days after they left, destroyed by the thing that had killed them: the Big Bear that roamed the forest.
When she was older, she would find it ironic that the beast she had been named for had been what killed her parents.
After the event, the elders sent her and her brother, Leon, who was a season cycle younger than her, to live with their grandmother. She was a kind old woman, and she held a spot as one of the village leaders. Her apprentice, Bo, lived with her as well. Both siblings took to the man nearly instantly.
Once a few season cycles had passed and Nita was old enough to begin training as a warrior or gatherer, Bo took her aside.
"Nita, do you know what a Skull Warrior is?"
Nita furrowed her brow, trying to remember the phrase. "Magic!" She finally shouted with a smile.
"Yes, very good child. But what kind of magic?"
Nita squinted thoughtfully and put her chin on her fist. "Not... amnimal?"
Bo smiled at her mispronunciation. "No, not animal. Special magic." Nita nodded as if the solution was obvious and she had known it all along.
"Did you know that you are a Skull Warrior?" This caught Nita's attention. She leaned forward on the log she was sitting on, completely intrigued.
"Really?"
"Yes. Your brother is one too."
Nita gasped as if someone had just told her the meaning of life. "Leon too?"
"Yes, Leon too."
Nita hopped off the log and began spinning in a circle, shouting "yay" all the while. Then, suddenly, she was falling, and before Bo could catch her, she had hit her head on the corner of the log.
"I'm okay!" she shouted as she stood back up. Even though a thin trickle of blood dripped down the side of her head, she did indeed seem mentally fine.
"Let's get you to the medicine woman."
A season cycle later, when Nita had been alive for five season cycles, Bo and Nita stood in a small clearing in the woods. It was barely big enough for two shelters, which made it perfect for what they planned to do.
Bo walked around the edge of the clearing, occasionally squatting down to light a fire in an incense pot. Nita stood in the middle of the clearing the entire time, bouncing on the balls of her feet.
"Calm, child. You will not find power within yourself if you are too distracted by the thought of sending it into the world," Bo scolded, amused by the girl's antics as he was.
"But I'm bored and I wanna hit something!" Nita whined. She flopped onto the ground, allowing her legging-clad legs to fly into the air comically for a moment.
Bo sat cross-legged in the middle of the clearing, a short ways away from Nita.
"Sit up, child." Nita rocked forward and placed her elbows on her knees, looking extremely bored all the while.
"Magic resides in every living thing from every corner of the world," Bo began. The trees around the clearing rustled, as if they agreed with him.
"As members of this tribe, we have a connection with the wilderness that others do not. We form bonds with animals, and they grant us power. But as Skull Warriors, you and I have a connection to magic that others do not. We hone it, and it gives us powerful weapons. Find the magic, Nita. Listen to it. Let it flow through you."
