Physical Appearance Hatchling to Adult
Gembreakers greatly resemble beetles, possessing similar wing shells and having the same manners of flight. They also have a large rhino-like horn which appears to be made of crystal. They also have crystals on their elbows and their tails, shaped like a morning-star. They are likely descended from Gronkles and Rumblehorns primarily, as the insect-like structure that houses their wings can only be found on Rumblehorns. There is actually a confirmed link to this resemblence, as the artist who modeled and textured Skullcrusher, Stoick's Rumblehorn, was told by the director, Dean DeBlois, to look at photos of scarab beetles for the design.
Abilities
Gembreakers fire a highly flammable, exploding loogie blast, remarkably similar in shape to the lava blast of a Gronckle. When in contact with a dragon's wings it will temporarily set them on fire.
Tracking
Gembreakers are said to possess extreme tracking skills, likely due to their lineage from Rumblehorn dragons.
Strength
Gembreakers are very powerful dragons, being capable of breaking through crystal pillars with their horns. A Night Light's electrical plasma blast can weaken them temporarily, but they can shake off its electrical effects moments later.
Endurance and Stamina
Gembreakers will relentessly follow any intruder on land, crashing through crystals, and in the air flying after the opponent.
Plowhorn can easily carry her rider on her back, and had also been taking physical offense from three other larger Gembreakers for an unknown period of time. Even when she was wounded, she fought to keep the riders away from approaching her.
Crystal Horn
The Gembreaker's secondary choice of weapon is its powerful crystal horn. They can be used to break off shards from larger crystals when they are feeding, or to attack enemies. This horn appears to be made of a crystalline material and can crack entire gem formations while charging towards it at full speed.
Intelligence
Gembreakers are shown to have relatively high intelligence, as demonstrated when three larger Gembreakers collaborated to block any escape route from the riders and their dragons. Even Plowhorn came up with the idea to collapse a gem pillar onto the antagonistic Gembreakers to defeat them.
Combat
Gembreakers are tough and combative dragons who will stand up against any intruder, either alone or forming into groups.
Social Nature
They will cooperate to find and fight any intruder that they might find in their territory.
Speed and Agility
Despite their bulky bodies, they are surprisingly fast as they were able to keep up with Thunder with ease.
Weaknesses
A Gembreaker's horn may get stuck in a crystal formation if they ram into it with too much force. While they are durable, delivering a hit onto them with enough blunt force will send them fleeing.
Behavior and Personality
Gembreakers are territorial and aggressive towards both humans and other dragons. Their hostile nature is what makes other dragons wisely avoid them. Larger sized Gembreakers will even terrorize smaller dragons, even their own species. Plowhorn was injured because she was being bullied and attacked by the larger ones of her kind.
The Gembreaker has been shown to eat shards from the crystals growing around the Hidden World.
Training
To train a Gembreaker, you need to gain its trust first through gentle actions, and proving that you are not a threat, especially in the case of injured Gembreakers. By healing its injuries, it will warm up and be thankful.
