Official Description"Known as "Berk's Builders," Shovelhelms use their scooping chins to dig and their hard heads to hammer, making them very handy to have around!
Shovelhelms prefer to stand back and assess the situation. On Berk they find the problem and fix it. In battle they find the problem and take advantage!
" — Dragons: Rise of Berk "As the annual tournament draws near, a viking's most valuable trait is nothing short of empowered ambition - or so some say. When it comes to working in groups, nothing's better than the reliable nature of a team player, and that was what Astrid soon found in School of Dragons' newest arrival, the SHOVELHELM!
While vikings are scrambling to put in the necessary preparations for the Clash of the Clans, Astrid is always one step ahead in maintaining a rigorous training regimen with her lovable Stormfly. Bearing a stunning record at Thunderrun Racing and practically perfect aim for the Fireball Frenzy, the brightest member of the Hofferson clan knows how to make her family proud!
Still even Astrid knew the value of a well-deserved break after powering through some healthy exercises. She figured now's as good as any to check on everyone else at the Training Grounds. Unfortunately, what she and Stormfly discovered instead was an area overrun with vikings and dragons too focused on their own preparations to consider the potentially disastrous aftermath of their making!
Or so they thought, until she noticed one Boulder Class dragon flying around from spot to spot repairing damaged parts amidst the chaos. While no one else noticed this lone dragon, Astrid confronted the steadfast helper to welcome it and offer her assistance. Immediately, the Shovelhelm took to her and led her to a nest of eggs in need of protection.
Understanding its concerns, Astrid and Stormfly went right to work in carrying its eggs to the Trading Post for safety. If you're worthy enough to earn the loyalty of this amiable dragon, come by and befriend a Shovelhelm today!

The Shovelhelm was created using a modular system to mix and match preset body parts onto different dragons. It was created from the same base that was used for the , , , , and two other .

Physical Appearance

In "Dragons: Rise of Berk", the Shovelhelm's egg is light blue with brown stripes. It has four rows of spikes, each run down the egg. The Shovelhelm's egg tapers towards the top. In "School of Dragons", the Shovelhelm's egg is blue on the top half and yellow on the bottom half. It has a crystal-like appearance and is asymmetrical.

to Adult

Shovelhelms' colors range from chartreuse to aquamarine with purple to brown stripes. They have large fangs on their lower jaw, long hooked chins, and possess a spiked frill on the back of their heads. Their tails are paddle-shaped and are almost manatee or beaver-like, which might also be used for their building abilities. They possess stubby arms, but they have been seen to rest or even stand on them, making the species semi-quadrupedal. Shovelhelms come in the typical range of colors, the most common ones being aquamarine and a slightly beige red. Their scales are splotched with tropical markings that run along with their faces, wings, back, and legs, leaving out only their underbelly.

Titan Wing Shovelhelms are brown, with yellow wings and tails, blue frills, and navy blue wavy stripes along their backs and wings. Their nasal horns are also much longer and sharper. Titan Wing Shovelhelms also developed a row of spines along their backs. Their frill is larger and has fewer spikes, making it look similar to that of a Styracosaurus. They also have a single large claw on each of their wings.

AbilitiesStrength and Combat

Shovelhelms possess well-developed strength to help with their behaviors of building and fixing. A hit from their head is stated to be as strong as a hammer and is shown to be strong enough to carry all the way to . They can also use their tails for offensive and defensive purposes.

Shovelhelms are able to produce orange-colored or green flames that can be used to illuminate dark environments. The flames come out in long and wide streams, similar to that of a Stoker Class dragon.

Digging

Shovelhelms are able to use the ledge on their chin to scoop out and remove dirt during their building behavior.

Swimming

Despite not being dragons, some Shovelhelm individuals, such as , are strong swimmers, even being able to perform their building behavior in the water.

WeaknessesLack of Speed

Shovelhelms aren't particularly fast in the air or on the ground.

Emotionality

They are very simple and docile, and can have their feelings hurt very easily.

Behavior and Personality

Shovelhelms are sociable creatures with a friendly temperament towards other dragons. It's possible that these dragons might work with or for other dragons, such as the for nest building. These dragons are also known to be level-headed and intelligent. They nip the root of the problem, instead of recklessly attacking or charging into action. They like to examine the situation first, then evaluate it and find the best way to solve it.

Shovelhelms can be coaxed with fish. If they are curious, let them help you build something. Like the majority of Boulder Class dragons, Shovelhelms are amiable with generally friendly personalities, unless feeling threatened: they also don't like to jump straight into a fight, indicating that training one would presumably be fairly straightforward. In addition, Valka had many trained Shovelhelms when she lived under the sanctuary of the Bewilderbeast, and even these semi-wild Shovelhelms showed how easily they trust humans.
