One - New Leaf

"The chief beauty about time
is that you cannot waste it in advance.
The next year, the next day,
the next hour are lying ready for you,
as perfect, as unspoiled,
as if you had never wasted or misapplied
a single moment in all your life.
You can turn over a new leaf every hour
if you choose."
Arnold Bennett

Brianna Byrne shuffles through the front door of her new house with a box in her arms and a smile on her face as the people hired to help bustle around the half-furnished house.

The house — which most would consider much too large for one person — stands alone at the end of an isolated street, and had been a work-in-progress with one of its three bedrooms being revamped into a home office/library.

Pulling her dirty blonde hair out of her face after she sets the box down, the woman looks around the living room with a satisfied grin stretching across her face.

Her move to Mystic Falls has been planned for a while — she was supposed to move at the start of the next semester to take over a retiring math teacher and offer one-on-one counselling and tutoring to the students of Mystic Falls High School — but an urgent request to act as an interim history teacher until the new one arrives had spurred an early move.

As morbid as the thought is, the death of Mr Tanner provided Brianna Byrne with the opportunity to find guidance sooner rather than later.

The young woman is a borderline genius, a socially adept prodigy who finished school early and is what many would label an ideal role model for the adolescents of Mystic Falls — a town plagued with sporadic bouts of so-called animal attacks dating back centuries.

Mr Tanner was the unlucky victim of one of these animal attacks, and his death proved fortuitous for the woman sweetly smiling as she offers drinks to the movers she hired.

"There is the annual Founders' Party," a man informs the green-eyed beauty as the last few boxes are carried into the house, "That's why it's so quiet."

Brianna nods, absorbing the information with quiet curiosity, "Mhmm, I got an invite. What else can you tell me about Mystic Falls?"

"Well, there are quite a lot of parties, and a few animal attacks — but that's pretty normal for a small town surrounded by forest," the man remarks with a shrug, before offering the woman some advice on places to visit, places to avoid, and small tidbits of information he finds slightly useful.

After the movers leave, Brianna turns to the boxes piled in her house and starts unpacking.

She sorts out the kitchenware before placing blankets and cushions on couches and moving furniture around slightly, scooting her dining room table back and forth before finding a satisfactory spot and leaving it be.
