Amyas knows. We're sat side by side and even though he's done nothing out of the ordinary all day, I know he knows.
I sigh heavily, dropping my pencil in frustration.
"Just fucking say it." I snap and Amyas grins, not looking away from his canvas.
"I knew it." He says smugly and I roll my eyes. I'm sick to death of this boy.
"Whatever." I mutter, shaking my head.
"So, when do I get to see it?" Amyas asks, his voice a little harder than I was expecting and I frown.
"Not until it's done." I say, screwing up my face.
Amyas knows I don't show my work until it's done.
He pauses, finally glancing up from his work to meet my eyes with a puzzled frown.
"But you never sleep with them until you're done." He says bluntly. I feel my cheeks burn as I look away, shrugging my shoulders casually.
"It just happened." I say.
"Bullshit." Amyas says.
"Why does the sequence of events matter?" I ask sharply and Amyas ponders my question for a moment, touching up something on his canvas.
"Because your work means everything to you. You don't allow anything to risk getting in the way of you finishing your work. Sleeping with your models drives them away, so you save it until you're done." He says finally.
I turn to look at him. It's a very astute observation and I find myself puzzled at how hurtful the truth can sound.
"Everett isn't just a model." I say quietly, turning back to my sketch.
Amyas watches me for a while before simply nodding, getting back to his work.
I bite my lip, my pencil still in my hand as I think about just how much more Everett means to me. He stays when no one else does. He laughs at my jokes, accepts my faults and never tries to change who I am. And sometimes, I can almost kid myself that he looks at me the way that I look at him.
"What is it like? To have found your muse?" Amyas asks suddenly, his eyes fixated on me.
I smile softly, the crease in my brow still barely there.
"Torture... and absolute bliss." I mutter.
Amyas looks half disturbed and half upset, and I leave him be while we finish the days work.
We pack up silently but he smiles at me when we descend the stairs of the studio, so I know I'm forgiven. We slip out into the open air and I grin when I spot Everett.
He's leant against his jeep, his arms crossed as he chats to the guy opposite him. Said guy holds my attention for approximately half a second, before I realise he is ordinary and completely uninteresting compared to the man on his right.
What does interest me though are the twins hanging out the back seat window of the jeep.
Completely identical in nearly every way, my mind races as I play a real life version of spot the difference. Their musculature seems to be their biggest give away, the one on the right being ever so slightly more filled out.
Their hair is a similar brown to Everetts, and I'm startled when I spot the same blue eyes. For a moment I'm reminded what Everett might look like, should he have had two blue eyes. But then I see the softer jaw lines, the less prominent brow ridges. The differences are there, and indicate that they're at the very least related.
Amyas beams when he sees the twins, running over to greet them and I pause, confused.
"Walter! Westley! What are you guys doing here?" He calls and they smile back, hanging out of the window with easy going expressions.
"Hey Amyas!" They call in unison and I laugh.
I wander over to them, eyeing Amyas curiously.
"Just how many brothers do you have, exactly?" I ask him and he laughs.
"A couple." He says and the twins groan.
My eyes trail back to Everett, unable to help myself as I study him for what feels like the thousandth time.
I suppose that's what I like so much about him. Every time I see him, there's something new there, some new facet that has remained undiscovered till now.
My eyes are drinking him in like a lost man in the desert when his head turns, those gorgeous mismatched eyes finding mine.
He looks away before frowning, his eyes slowly meeting mine again as we stare at each other.
He looks confused, as if he hadn't been expecting me to be looking at him, which is utterly ridiculous considering it is my only occupation when I'm not sculpting.
His friend nudges him, also looking at me and Everett turns away.
"Why is he looking at you like that?" His friend asks in a very poorly hushed voice.
"He's not." Everett says definitively and I smirk.
"Oh, I definitely am." I say, smiling properly when Everett shoots me a withering glare.
"Get in the car?" He asks and I raise my eyebrows but don't fight him, climbing into the jeep.
I slide into the passenger seat before Amyas and he whines, wedging himself into the seat between the twins. I turn to look at them through the gap in the seats, the twins both looking back curiously.
"Hi, I'm Ledger." I say, smiling suggestively at them.
Amyas pushes my head back aggressively as I laugh.
"Stop it. It's bad enough you already got to Everett." He mutters.
"What?! What does that mean?" The twin on the right says.
"Nothing." Everett says suddenly, climbing into the car.
I glance back at him, completely entranced and all thoughts of the twins completely forgotten.
"Who is this guy, Ev?" The other twin asks, a little softer spoken.
"Ledger is Amyas' friend. He's a sculptor." He says, keeping his eyes on the road as he starts the jeep.
"Cool." The twins say in unison, groaning afterward.
"Where exactly are we going?" I ask pleasantly.
"We are going home, you are being dropped off." He says tightly and I nod.
"I could have walked, you know?" I murmur, my voice dropping and he sighs. I watch as his fingers tighten over the steering wheel.
"I know." He says simply and I nod.
"Still on for tomorrow?" I ask and he nods.
"What's tomorrow?" A voice asks and Everett glances in the rearview mirror.
"Mind your own business, West." He says as I try and memorise which twin is which.
"Everett is helping Ledger with a sculpture." Amyas says evenly and I smile, glancing out the window.
"Oh cool. That's nice of you, Everett." Walter says, and I watch as Westley's eyes narrow slightly in the rearview mirror.
"Very nice." Westley says and I smirk.
Everett pulls up outside my apartment and I smile at him in thanks.
He watches me for a moment before sighing, his lips pulling up slightly and causing sparks to erupt inside my veins.
I hop out the jeep, my portfolio dangling from my fingertips as I watch the brothers drive away.
