FIVE

Lexy’s heart was pounding as she was being led down the hallway by the principal. Her parents were walking on either side of her not saying a word. Their faces were sheet white, and her mom looked like she may cry. They think I put that picture there, Lexy thought to herself as her shaky legs carried her forward.

Her face was pale, if not paler, than her parents. Every minute or two that horrid image of Brydan would enter her mind, and she had to fight the urge not to hurl all over the hallway, and on Principal Rivera’s shoes.

Lexy couldn’t understand. What kind of sick, twisted person would do such a thing, and at his memorial service with his parents and sister sitting right there? A chill then ran up and down her spine.

What if his murderer put them there?

Lexy’s breath was caught her throat as the possibilities entered her mind. All of this could mean the killer could be in the school at this very minute. That thought made Lexy want to bolt straight out of the front doors of the school, but her pace stayed controlled, although her legs still felt like Jell-O. The green kind. For obvious reasons.

Even though Lexy couldn’t be completely positive about the principals reasoning behind her visit to his office, she was sure it was because he thought she did it, although she hoped she was wrong. Maybe he was bringing her there to question her? That thought gave Lexy unheeded comfort, and like that it was gone. The image of principals tomato red face flooded her mind, and then Lexy knew they had already pinned her as guilty. How could they even think she could do such an appalling act? He was Lexy’s boyfriend for Gods sake!

None of this was adding up, but there was no more time to make sense of things, because Lexy was now entering Principal Rivera’s office. She slowly took her seat in the chairs provided, that were facing his desk. Her whole body was breaking out into a cold sweat, and her thighs were beginning to stick to the chairs leather upholstery. The only sounds coming from the room were the sounds of her parents and the principals breathing. No one was saying anything, and that was making her more nervous.

Before speaking, the principal let out a long, even breath. “Now, Annalexis, I know you’re angry and upset over Brydan’s…passing, but there was no need to take your hurt and anger out on the school…”

Lexy’s eyes grew wide and her mouth hung open. What?!?

“What are you talking about?” Lexy spat out, interrupting Principal Rivera. “I did not put that picture there! I… I…” Lexy’s face was burning with anger, and confusion. Why the hell do they think I did it? I am his girlfriend for Gods sake! “I would never do anything like that! Why do you all think I, of all people, did it?” she asked, shaking her head. She was so angry by their assumptions, her ears were ringing, and that was already making the headache she already had, worse.

“Well, Annalexis-” he began.

“Its Lexy…” Lexy hissed through her teeth.

“Well, Lexy, you were the one who put the whole slide show together. It’s the only logical explanation.” he said.

“Just because it’s the logical explanation, doesn’t mean it’s the right one! And besides, why would I write he had it coming on the picture?” she argued, rather loudly.

“Calm down, honey.” he mother soothed.

“No! I’m not going to calm down! All of this is bullshit! I did not put those pictures there! Brydan was my boyfriend, and I loved him. I would never dishonor him that way. And if you all think for a second that I would…well…well, you all can go to hell!” Lexy then shot up from her seat, and head for the door.

“Annalexis, I suggest you rethink what your doing.” Principal Rivera said angrily.

Lexy stood at door with her hand on the door knob, her eyes were filled with tears, and her cheeks were burning. She then blinked away her tears, and looked at both of her parents, her mother was crying and her dad was staring at her, wide eyed. “I’m sorry, mom….dad.” she choked on her words, and blinked away more tears, and then made eye contact with her red-faced principal and in a calm, even voice she said, “I told you, it’s Lexy.

With that, Lexy opened the door, walked out, and slammed the door so loud, she made the janitor, who was mopping the floor in the hallway, jump. “Sorry.” she muttered to him, and she quickly retreated to the schools exit.

Once Lexy made it to her car, she placed her forehead on her steering wheel, and muttered to herself, “Why is this happening?” Then the tears began falling, and before she knew it, she was bawling her eyes out, and snotting all over herself. Crying for Brydan, and what was now happening to her. Then a knock on her window scared her to death.

Lexy gasped, and brought her hand to her pounding chest. Lexy then wiped away the mess of tears that were on her cheeks. Once her vision was cleared, she looked at Luke, staring at her with his eyebrows narrowed with worry.

Lexy then rolled down her window. “Lexy? Are you okay?” he asked.

“Yeah, I’m fine. What do you care?” she snapped.

“I care plenty. And what happened back there…It was messed up. I’ve been looking everywhere for you to make sure you were okay.” he said.

“Yeah, well now you know I’m fine… Perfectly okay… Now you can go.” she said, losing patience.

“Lexy, I know I’m not your favorite person at the moment, after how things went that day, but I do care. I’m not heartless, you know.” he said

“Could’ve fooled me…” Lexy muttered quietly to herself.

“What?” he asked.

“Nothing… So, why the sudden interest in how I feel? You barely know me.” Lexy said.

Lexy couldn’t be sure, but she thinks she saw Luke smile slightly. “Well, for one, I don’t want you to hate me, because that day at my house, I got the feeling that you thought I had something to do with what happened to Brydan.”

“Only reason I thought that it because you and him got in a fight…” she said.

“Just because me and him fought doesn’t mean I wanted to kill him… I barely knew the guy…He was the one who had it in for me.” he said.

“Why did he have it in for you?” Lexy asked.

“Because… I don’t really wanna tell you all of it right now. It’s not the right time. I don’t think your ready for that much of it yet. It’s only been a month.” he said.

“Not ready for what? What are you not telling me?” she asked.

“Look, Lexy. In all honesty, it doesn’t really matter anymore. I promise, when I think the time is right, I’ll tell you, but for now can we leave it at that?” he pleaded.

Lexy sighed, and looked away for a moment. “Yeah, that’s fine, I guess, but isn’t there anything you can tell me?”

“Well, I’ll tell you one of the reasons he fought me…” Luke then took in a breath, and looked straight at Lexy. “I liked you, and Brydan found out.”

Right then Lexy could feel her cheeks beginning to blaze all over again. “You liked me? As in, past tense?” she asked.

“We’ll see.” Luke smirked at Lexy, gave her a half smile, and walked away. Leaving Lexy speechless.
