FOUR
Four weeks later.
The halls of Cartersville High School were full of students scurrying to their first period class. Lexy, on the other hand, was in no hurry. In half an hour, the high school would be holding a school wide memorial service in Brydan's honor, and everyone was expecting her to say a few words on his behalf. She was terrified. The thought of getting up in front of the entire school made Lexy feel like she was going to puke. She doesn't understand why they would expect her to even be able to speak at all. Can't they understand that it would be very hard for someone to speak about someone they just recently lost?
Why did I even agree to do this, Lexy asked herself while putting away her books she had brought home over the weekend, not bothering to even grab her books for her first class, which was American History with Mr. Yearly.
Today all of the Juniors were going to be dismissed early to go to Brydan's visitation at Owen Funeral Home. The visitation was for the students, before the actual one began at six. But even though Lexy was only a sophomore, they were allowing her and a few other of Brydan's sophomore friends to leave as well.
On her way to class, she ran a quick check list in her head of everything for the memorial service. She was the one who helped organize most of it. Her main duties were to pick a play list of songs that were to play during the slideshow of pictures of Brydan that she had picked out, figure out what to say in her little speech, and pick one other person to speak. The person she ended up picking to say a few words was Brydan's best friend, Brennan Garrison. He was the obvious choice, seeing as he had been friends with Brydan since birth, pretty much. The duty of decorating the gym was given to the Art Club. The only other people that were going to speak at the memorial service was Principal Rivera, and Brydan's football coach. There also was going to be a performance by Erika Lancaster and Damien Laney, they were the schools official National Anthem singers at all the sporting events. Damien Laney was also Jessica's older brother. Damien was a senior, and what Lexy would call a "mutt". He was probably the best looking guy in Cartersville, but he was also a redneck/prep. The thing that made him a mutt was that he would wear boots, but wear the preppy label t-shirts, like Aeropostale, Abercrombie, American Eagle, and so on. On the cold days he would wear his dark brown Carhart jacket. Therefore, he was mixed with prep and redneck, and in Lexy's eyes that made him a mutt.
Luckily for Lexy she was going to be the first one to speak, so she would be able to get it over with as soon as possible.
When Lexy reached Mr. Yearly's classroom, she made a beeline for the seat next to Mila. She then glanced at the clock on the wall. 8:05. The memorial service was twenty five minutes away. Her hands then started shaking, and her heart began pounding. "You okay, babe?" Mila asks when she finally breaks herself free of the guy who had been hitting on her for a month now.
"No." She groaned miserably.
"Nervous?" Mila asked, and cocked her head.
"Horribly, I'll probably barf once I get up to the podium." she says and begins massaging her temples.
