I'll always be here. It's what he always says.
What he told you after he discovered your depression and your self-harm. He took away the small knife you were using to cut yourself, and for once didn't blush or stutter, but held you close. As you curled up into his chest, letting out sobs you didn't even know were trapped inside, he leaned in and whispered these words into your ear. I'll always be here.
When you took too much of a risk at the sports festival and ended up with a back injury that was severe enough to the point where you couldn't walk for days, he stayed by your side. When you tried to shuffle your way over to the other wall but didn't make it, falling to the floor and holding back tears, he helped you up. As he helped you right yourself and walk, he smiled and said those words to you again. I'll always be here.
When you fought because of his risks, the constant hospital visits that were preventing you two from seeing each other still heavy on your minds, he came back and whispered through your closed door, reassuring you. He still loved you. He would be more careful. As a final parting statement, he told you what he always had; I'll always be here.
When you both graduated from UA to become heroes and he got an invitation for a high-paying job in America, he rejected it. His payment from his agency in Japan had been significantly raised, anyway, due to their fear of losing the new symbol of peace to a foreign country. As he came back after a long night sorting everything out, he smiled as you kissed him, running a hand to your back and whispering that he would never have taken the American job. It would have put him too far away from you. He leaned down and told you the same thing he'd told you for years; I'll always be here.
Even when he found you sitting on the bathroom floor in tears, a positive pregnancy test in your hand, he was still steady and strong. As worried as he was, he reassured you that no matter what your decision, he would stand by you. After you decided to keep the baby, he pulled you to him and held you close, one hand on your back and the other gently stroking your hair. No matter what, he reassured you, I'll always be here.
When you were further along in your pregnancy and you saw a reporter flirting with him on the tv and he came home to find you looking disappointedly at your reflection in the mirror, he simply wrapped his arms around you from behind. With his hands on your swollen stomach, his lips placing gentle but loving kisses on your neck and shoulders, he whispered to you about your beauty and reminded you the same thing; I'll always be here.
When you took a walk to the spot you first met and he kneeled down and pulled out a ring, you knew exactly what he was going to say. He proclaimed his love for you and asked to always be there by your side. When you accepted, he kissed you and told you yet again, I'll always be here.
But when you woke in the night to your young daughter crying and found his side of the bed empty, you went to the kitchen after putting your daughter to sleep and wordlessly went over and hugged your husband. This time, it was your turn to comfort him and say the words he had been telling you all those years.
I'll always be here.
