Jirou didn't notice her at first. No one did. Just another one of the general studies nobodies. A loner like Shinsou, at least until he transferred to class 1-A.

All it took was a coincidence and a song.

Jirou was sitting at a table with the rest of her class, all excitedly talking about the camp that was being set up that summer, a little closer to the city to avoid another incident with aspiring villains. The constant chatter of the hero students was tiring to keep up with, so she just quietly ate her rice and tried to tune them out.

That was when she noticed.

There was a soft humming sound coming from behind her. Curious, she focused on the tune. She smiled. American Pie. A foreign song, one from America that she didn't fully understand. It was undeniably catchy and had a good tune. And this girl had an amazing voice. The notes she hummed flowed into each other almost hypnotically. Jirou snapped out of it when Denki waved a hand in front of her face. He shifted closer to Bakugou upon seeing her glare, and got shoved away for his trouble.

When Jirou turned back to look for the girl, she was gone.

The next day, the girl was there, in the same spot, humming a different tune. Pop this time. Jirou ate her lunch while listening to the girl's song.

Every day the song changed. A foreign pop song one day, then regular rock, occasionally even folk. The only time she ever stopped humming was when she jotted down something on the notebook she kept open next to her. The tune would stop, there would be the scratch of pencil on paper, and then she would pick up right where she left off. Jirou adjusted to her new habit of listening to the girl's humming, hoping to hear her sing. And one day she got her wish.

After training, there was an impressive amount of Deku's blood splattered on Jirou's arms. That kid really didn't stop until he passed out. She wasn't injured enough to warrant a visit to Recovery Girl, but Aizawa had looked her up and down and told her to wash up before she went home for the day.

Due to a quirk mishap, the bathroom nearest to the entrance from the training grounds had been nearly destroyed, and they were still working on repairing it. The closest functioning bathroom was in an unused block of classrooms, built with the anticipation of a lot more applicants than the school actually got. The classrooms were mainly used for tutoring and after-school programs, but students could use them independently for studying.

After Jirou scrubbed down her arms and pressed a couple of paper towels to the cut on her forehead until it stopped bleeding, she started the walk back to the classroom so she could pack her belongings and leave. As she was walking back, she heard a familiar voice coming from one of the classrooms.

It was the girl from lunch. The one who sat alone, humming songs for just her (and although she didn't know it, Jirou) to hear. Except this time, she was singing. Along with her voice, she could hear the strum of an acoustic guitar. Jirou recognized the song. She couldn't remember the artist or the name, just that Mina had excitedly played it, saying it was a new release from her favorite band. Some pop song.

This wasn't just some pop song anymore. The girl had changed it from a bright and upbeat song about love to a soft, slow song that gave the lyrics an entirely different meaning. Peeking through one of the windows, Jirou saw the same notebook she was always writing in open on a music stand. Whoever this girl was, she was...

Amazing.

After slipping some random, subtle questions about her in a conversation with Shinsou, all she could find out was her name and the fact that she'd always been a loner. Never talked to anyone, never socialized. Just a wallflower.

But how can a wallflower be this beautiful?

Jirou quickly adjusted to her new routine. Listen to the girl—no, y/n—humming at lunch and then head to the empty classroom to listen to her play the same song and sing. Comfortable with her routine, time flew away from her, and before she knew it, she was outside the classroom on the day before summer break, listening to one last song.

This one she recognized. Another foreign rock song. Wildflowers. Jirou stood leaning against the wall, her eyes closed as she took in the song. The light strum of the guitar, her melodic voice. She could stay here forever, just listening.

The song ended, and she heard y/n put away the music stand and zip up her guitar case. She reminded herself to hide around the corner until she left, but something told her to stay.

The door opened, and y/n gave a start when she saw Jirou in front of her. Jirou awkwardly fiddled with her ears, staring at the ground. She took a deep breath.

"Hi. I'm Jirou."

It's been almost ten years since that day. The girl from general studies and the girl from the hero course lead very different lives but they are far from separate. Every night they both come home to their shared apartment, exhausted from their careers. Y/n didn't realize making music was just as physically and emotionally taxing as being a hero when she signed her first contract, although she still wouldn't have thought twice.

The couple have a bit of a routine. First, Get up. Jirou has evolved into a morning person because of hero work, but y/n still needs some convincing. After rousing her unwilling wife, Jirou moves on to her even more unwilling son. He's just started first grade, and he still isn't used to having to get up so early. By the time she's gotten the boy dressed, y/n has a pot of coffee brewed and breakfast made. Jirou leaves for her agency at the same time y/n leaves to drop their son off at school, and then she's off to the recording studio. If it's her day off, then straight back home to get some more sleep.

Friday is takeout day, so Jirou picks up sushi on the way home. The family eats in front of the tv, watching a random cooking show that's on. After they've finished, y/n helps get their son ready for bed. Most kids have bedtime stories. He has a bedtime song. It's a sweet lullaby, a duet that balances y/n's voice perfectly with Jirou's. After he's fallen asleep, they quietly leave his room to sleep themselves. And as they lie in their bed, the matching rings on their fingers are a reminder.

Sometimes all it takes is a coincidence and a song.
