TW: bullying, f-slur, homophobia

It was a monday, the worst day of the week and Jake was about to leave to catch the bus. He saw his dad asleep on the couch and didn't wanna wake him up in fear he'd get mad. He quietly snuck out and made his way to the bus stop. He waited a moment until the bus arrived and hopped on. He found a seat towards the back and just went on his phone to pass time. Jake went on insta and saw posts of people with their friends having fun and couldn't help but feel a tear fall down his face. He immediately wiped it away and went to listen to music to clear his mind.

Jake normally had a love-hate relationship when it came to school. He liked that it was an escape from home. Usually, when his dad would get drunk he'd hit him, pass out, or yell hateful things and Jake didn't like being around him. School was an escape from that. Going to school meant seeing his dad less and having a reason to get away from him.

But Jake didn't like how stressed and alone it made him feel. He didn't have many friends, or any for that matter, so he felt alone at times. Sometimes he even got bullied for being the weird gay kid. He never did come out or anything but people just assumed and went on with it like it was one big joke. Whenever he had to choose a partner he would always end up working by himself since no one actually wanted to work with him. He hated that feeling but pretended like it didn't bother him. Whenever they would have free time at P.E. Jake would often sit on the sidelines reading a book or going on his phone because he had nothing better to do and had no friends to hang out with. He often spent lunch alone just listening to music and podcasts. Devon podcast to be exact. Jake didn't know why, but it brought him comfort. He watched as other people had fun talking to their friends but tried his best to ignore it.

As Jake arrived it was raining. He was used to getting bullied sometimes and getting called awful remarks. He tried his best to ignore it but of course it still hurt. He made his way straight to his locker in order to put some of his stuff away before class, hoping to avoid Lexy. Lexy, Junior, Oliver, and Devon were the most popular people in school. They often picked on Jake for being weird and gay. Not Devon though, he was nicer, different. Jake saw Lexy and Junior coming his way.

"Hey freak," the blonde girl said in disgust.

"What do you want Lexy" Jake said

"For you to stop acting like a fag" Lexy snapped.

"What?" Jake questioned without trying to sound hurt.

"I saw you staring at Devon the other day, he's not interested. Why would anyone be interested in a fag like you" Lexy said smirking. Junior laughed at Lexy's comment.

"I don't even like Devon and I'm not gay so leave me alone." Jake blurted out, accidentally being loud and immediately covering his mouth. He saw as people turned to him and felt embarrassed. Devon wasn't very far from them and probably overheard.

Jake couldn't stand there any longer and went straight to his first class. Devon tried his best to follow and confront Jake. He was curious as to what caused Jakes outburst.

"Hey Jake!" Devon said.

"What do you want?" Jake scoffed.

"Woahh, um I just wanted to ask if you were okay?" Devon said nervously.

"Yeah I'm fine, sorry if that was mean, I've had a bad morning and was just surprised you talked to me. Jake replied, feeling bad.

"Its okay, knowing Lexy she can be really mean sometimes." Devon added.

"Yeah she can be, anyways I'll see you later I guess." Jake said

"Sure see ya! ... Actually Jake, would you wanna go to lunch together later. I noticed you often sit by yourself so why not." Devon asked.

"Um sure." Jake agreed. He was happy that Devon noticed him for once, but felt that it was only out of pity. He made his way to class and waited for lunch.

*******
Jake started packing up his things and started going to the lunchroom. He sat down at the table waiting for Devon. He decided to listen to music for the time-being until Devon finally made his way over and sat down. People started to notice as Jake and Devon talked, but the two boys didn't care. They had fun talking about their interests even if it wasn't for long before Lexy and Junior walk in.

The thing about Lexy is, she doesn't really like bullying Jake and often feels bad but she likes the attention and popularity she receives from doing it. She doesn't receive much attention at home so having it at school makes her happy even if what's she's doing is bad. Lexy has never seen Jake happy until now. She saw Jake smiling talking to Devon and felt bad for ever treating him wrong. She never really thought about his feelings, only her own. She treated him like shit and expected him to still be happy but never cared about his feelings.

Expecting Lexy and Junior to bully him, Jake got tense. What he didn't expect was for Lexy to pull him aside and apologize for everything.

"Jake, I'm so sorry for treating you so shitty. It was not cool at all and I just wanted attention. No one deserves to get treated like that, and I'm just so sorry. If I could take it all back I would. I am truly truly sorry. I understand if you don't accept my apology, but I hope that soon you understand." Lexy apologized.

Jake was stunned, that was the last thing he expected to happen today. He finally understood why Lexy acted the way he did. Instead of getting mad as Lexy expected, he just sat in silence. He wanted to feel angry at Lexy but could only feel bad. She treated him horribly for so long and he knew that, so why did he feel bad. Just because she has family problems doesn't mean he deserved to be treated that way. He didn't know what to say so he just sat in silence. He sorta understood where Lexy was coming from and decided to be the bigger person.

"Hey Lexy, I appreciate the apology. If I'm being honest, you have been pretty shitty, but people grow and I can understand where you're coming from. Wanna sit with me and Dev at lunch?" Jake said sorta hoping she would decline.
"Wait...really?" Lexy asked, confused but excited.
"Sure why not." Jake assured.
"Okay!!!" Lexy said happily.

They both went to sit down with Dev and it was awkward at first but eventually they started to get along and it wasn't so bad. Jake didn't really regret inviting Lexy to sit with him and Devon. She was actually more interesting than he thought. He sorta wished this could be an everyday thing. He enjoyed finally having people to talk to at lunch, even if it was his old bully.

*****

Devon and Lexy started sitting with Jake at lunch more often. They enjoyed hanging out with him and he was starting to become a part of their friend group. Jake finally had people to call his friends. Eventually Oliver and Junior apologized to Jake for their past bullying and started joining them at lunch too. The group all became super close with Jake and counted him as one of their own.
