Sins of the Unholy

Chapter: 14: Heaviness of the Heart

Over the years, with the amount of Soul Reapers in Karakura, the Soul Society set up a base of operations within town. The Matsukura Hospital still looks abandoned from the outside but step within and you're transported into a very different setting. All four floors have been transformed as housing and base of operations for any Soul Reapers that pass through.

Captain Hitsugaya and Captain Hirako of Squad 5, stand before a video monitor. Captain Kyoraku greets them and both give a small bow. His lieutenant hands over a clipboard and the old man hums a bit before sighing out dramatically.

"The test samples have been processed by Squad 12, what we're seeing here is odd." The Head Captain hands the clipboard back and tips his hat up. Since the spotting of the Kirin, Squad 12 had dropped in and taken samples. While they had, they'd witnessed three more Kirin appear and burst across Karakura.

"The reishi the beasts created is just that reishi. The fact that they're spreading it over a human town is what's off, why spread it around when they could simply come here to take it." Kyoraku sits back in his chair and waves off his lieutenant. Both captains make no move to acknowledge what's been said but Kyoraku continues.

"We have less than two weeks before the intended arrival, for now keep your squads on patrol. I plan to have two more Captain's join you before anything can happen. Get comfy, but keep your eyes open." They both bow as the screen begins to fizzle out and then turn off all together. Captain Hirako groans as he turns away from the screen and proceeds out of the room. Rangiku passes the Captain to join her own.

"Captain?"

"Squad 5 has the patrol for tonight, we take over in the morning." Toshiro's words are formal, showing signs of his old cold personality. Ragiku moves closer to her Captain but he turns away from her.

"Make sure they stay out of trouble." He leaves out the door and down the hall. His steps are swift as he moves toward his Captain's quarters. Once inside, Toshiro takes off Hyorinmaru and deposits it on the bed. Going over to his desk, he looks over the reports. Pictures of the scattered reishi and places impacted lay scattered about.

"A feeding ground." Speaks up Toshiro as he moves the pictures and looks at the report below. Four kirin over four different points in Karakura, the land below covered in dust like reishi. All of it staying and not moving.

"What are they planning?" Question's Toshiro as he sits and lets his shoulders sag. His mind is like a blizzard, nothing is solid and everything is coming to a tipping point.

"She is safe, she will wake and we will go home." Hyorinmaru's words come to him calmly but the blizzard he feels howls louder. The sword hums from the bed but the Captain ignores it.

Focusing, Toshiro thinks back to the moment she'd come to his squad. The girl had looked scared standing by the former Head Captain. Like watching a little child hide behind a parent. The Head Captain spoke of the situation, of her odd powers, of the ability to see into the future. Little of it had reached him as he watched her. In the start, she'd been skittish, always afraid of her own shadow and what problems she would cause.

He hadn't understood then the extent of her abilities till she'd warned him about the Cang Du fight. She'd begged him to stay back, the fear in her eyes as she gripped his haiori repeated often in his mind. But he knew his duty as she did, she told him to get out if anything had been off and yet his Bankai had still been stolen.

Never did he think his life would become dedicated to one person like it was to her. Wrapping him in the green scarf, she'd saluted him and he'd gone off to start the Thousand Year Blood war. But like anyone of his squad, she'd greeted him when he came back and did her duty. From then on they became inseparable. She'd begun to melt the ice and bring him back from the edge.
