There is a point when a civilization has reached its lowest point. The fall of the Roman empire can be considered the greatest example. Hundreds of years were used by leaders to make an empire prosper and move forward. But in the end, everything crumbled. Society, as it is now, led a life worth writing about in the history books. So many lives were lost in the wars ignited by the idea of freedom and prosperity for a country people would equate to their place in the world. And as for the fall of the Roman empire, we had to fall back to its roots.
However, as each society falls, they will bring something with them into their dark ages. What is it we brought with us? The ungrateful attitudes toward resources that were never theirs? How about the greed everyone shares in believing anything is theirs if they touch it? Even at the peak of despair, we find a way to taint the life that is so precious to hold on to.
Every living being is born into a world of devastation, whether it is apparent or not. I was not excluded from this list. I couldn't recall the amount of carnage I have witnessed nor the graphic sights I have had to endure just to see the light of another day. I'll let you in on a secret beforehand.
There is merit in becoming the eyes of a civilization rather than its sword and shield. Amongst the blooming carnage, you take note of the intricate details everyone else is blindsided by. You learn from the mistakes and holes you can mend when your deja vu is triggered in the future. Some days, though, I miss the world we took for granted.
Give an inch and take a mile, is what the people in the past said. But what if there are no more miles to take, and the world has already given all that it can?
