Terminology:

Airship: An aircraft that flies using lighter-than-air gas held in a balloon-like structure. Blimps and zeppelins are common examples

Axial Catwalk [see "Catwalk"]: An important catwalk on a zeppelin. It runs straight through the center of the ship's envelope (nose to tail), passing through the gasbags, which are donut-shaped

Bow: The front of a ship. In an airship, this is synonymous with the ship's "nose"

Bulkhead: Typically refers to an upright wall that separates compartments within the hull of a ship. In a zeppelin, the structural rings (and associated suspension cables) that support the airship's body act as bulkheads between gas cells

Cabin: An enclosed room on a ship. Most house some kind of living space, like bedrooms

Catwalk: A narrow walkway, usually suspended. Zeppelins have many

Deck: The flat "floor" or "ceiling" of a ship. In a zeppelin, the main decks are housed inside the body of the airship, along the bottom of the envelope.

Envelope: An airship's "balloon" or body

Galley: A ship's kitchen

Gasbag: Huge sacks that hold the lifting gas inside a zeppelin's envelope

Goldbeater's Skin: A thin, strong, gas-tight material made from the outer membrane of cow intestines. Used extensively in the late 1800s and early 1900s for making airship gasbags

Gondola: The passenger compartment suspended underneath an airship

Hatch: An opening in a wall or deck, usually to allow access to parts of a ship

Heading: The direction a ship is pointed in

Keel: A rigid structure running along the bottom of an airship's envelope to help provide structural support and distribute the weight of the gondola

Mooring Mast: A tall pole that a docked airship gets tied to to keep it in place

To Moor (a ship): To secure a ship to land or an anchor

Port: A designated, usually coastal hub for ships (or airships) to come and dock, pick up or offload cargo, etc. Also a word for the left side of a ship

Rudder: The steering apparatus of a ship. It is able to swing back and forth to catch the wind and turn the vessel

Starboard: The right side of a ship

Stern: The back of a ship

Talwar: A type of curved sword or sabre from the Indian subcontinent

Zeppelin: A type of airship with a long, slender envelope made of fabric over a metal frame, inside of which the airship's gasbags exist as separate compartments. Diagrams below. The airships in this book are all zeppelins
