CHAPTER 2

I hid behind my mom's leg, afraid of the new surroundings.

"Come on, Olivia. I have to get to work," mom said, stepping away, leaving me to stumble a bit.

"But momma, I'm scared," I said quietly.

"You'll be fine," she said.

"But momma-" I started but she was already out the door. My eyes widened as I looked around in fear. All the kids were so big here.

"Hey, what's your name?" a boy with curly hair asked. "I'm William."

I tried to match the boy's cheerful smile. "I'm Olivia."

"Cool name! I know you're new so you can play with me," William said, starting to walk away. He looked back at me. "Come on! You don't have to be afraid."

I pouted. "I- I'm not afraid!"

He laughed heartily. "Whatever you say Olivia, whatever you say."

I gulped, looking at the big house before me. "Will, I'm scared."

"Don't worry! School's not that bad. And you have me!" he said happily. "I'll protect you from any of the bullies!" He made a punching movement at the end of the sentence to emphasize his point.

"Bullies?" I asked, eyes widening.

He laughed. "Don't worry about it!"

"O-Okay," I nodded, putting on a brave face and smiling at William. "I'll see you during lunch!"
