Ten years ago
An ice storm hit Dragon City six weeks after Shen Wei's coronation, one week after the former generals and heads of various noble families were brought to Dixing to await trial for war crimes.
In the chaos of the war ending, disarmament, troops returning home after years away, the Emperor dying, the noble families of course choosing this as an opportunity...Hei Yanjing had honestly thought that Xie Yuchen would be fine.
They were parted lovers, disarmament and the destruction of Ye keeping them apart. He had been sending random letters, trying to hide he was contacting someone in Haixing, but so far, no reply.

It had not been finished, but Shen Wei refused to rebuild the Ye capital, his grief raw enough. So, after he had won the throne, dispatched his mentally unstable rival and solidified his power as much as a young king, stepping into the crown of his twin brother could, they had moved here. To a place that wasn't ready for hundreds of imperial staff, the seat of the national army and the king himself.
For Hei Yanjing keeping Shen Wei safe took priority, for him and all of Shen Wei's most loyal.
This was of course after the rival noble house tried to kill Shen Wei, backed them into a corner and... the whole crazy last survivor of the Hanga valley is Chu Shuzhi's fake cousin scheme, that had now landed them an already pregnant Empress. He barely had time to eat, let alone focus on anything more than keeping a grieving, volatile Shen Wei alive.
Then news came that the Nine Families had been commanded to give up their heir to Dixing or Shangbei, to stand trial. Most people did not understand the meaning of the Families, thinking of them as noble power and nothing special, so Hei Yanjing didn't hear anything of it until it was nearly too late and he was so far away.
