Chapter 5

You stayed in your room for about four hours, reading your books to pass the time until your parents went to bed and occasionally looking out your window at the poor souls working on the pyramids for the King.

You shivered to think that Char could have been one of them, if his father had been selfish enough to take the servant job, which some parents were.

You never met him but you knew he was a good snake and, if things were different, he would be by his son's side, always.

You wondered what he would think of his son being sold to King Mambo. Would he be happy that Char would get a better living space in the castle? What did he think about selling someone in general? What would he think about you and Char being friends, and you hoping that you could be more than that? Would he approve?

You sighed, well aware that you wouldn't be getting answers to your questions from yourself and went back to reading your book, knowing your parents would be going to bed soon.

-----

It was after midnight when you slowly opened your bedroom door and quietly crept out, making sure to grab a huge stack of writing paper before you left that Char could use to write to you. You were pretty tired, since you were up pretty early yesterday to see the King but you reminded yourself that this was quite possibly the last time you would ever see Char, so you pushed your tiredness away and continued on your journey to Char's living quarters.

The house was creepily quiet at night. You remember when you were little your Father telling you that if you came out out of your room at night, a ghost would come and possess you and force you to jump off the balcony. You knew it was complete nonsense now, but you still felt nervous, even though you often snuck out to see Char.

After an uneventful trip, you had made it to the servant's living area. Compared to the rest of the house, it was dingy and dirty, since the servants didn't get to clean it very often as they were busy cleaning your family's part of the house and cooking for them. Your family didn't seem to care though, they didn't go down into the servant's living area.

You winced as you noticed that your tail had a thin layer of dirt on it.
'I'll have to clean myself after I visit Char.' You thought, making a mental note of this to yourself.
You then slithered over to Char's door and knocked quietly. Almost immediately, it opened, like he was waiting by the door for you.

"Hey, Y/N." He said quietly, holding open the door for you to come in.
"Hi Char." You responded, entering his room.
Looking around Char's room, you noticed that he had packed his stuff already. Not that he had much belongings, he only had a drawing of him and his family that he did as a snakeling when he first came to serve your family.

"Here, I brought you some writing paper for you to use." You said, handing him the stack.
"Thank you, Y/N." He said sadly, taking it and putting it in his bag.
Watching him put the stack of paper in his bag, you caught a glimpse of what else was in there; drawings you and him drew together when you were children.
Seeing this, the realisation that you would never see Char again hit you again at full force.
"Oh Char, I don't want you to go! You cried quietly, tears beginning to spill.
"I don't want to go either Y/N! But, there's nothing we can do." He said, beginning to cry himself.
Char slithered over and hugged you, which you gladly returned.

You and Char held each other for as long as you two could but eventually Char let go.

"Hey, we shouldn't spend our last night together crying and sobbing. We should be remembering all the good times we had together and having fun!" Char said with a sad yet eager smile.
You looked at him and managed to smile for the first time tonight.
"You're right! Hey, remember the time when we thought that sand was salt and I put some on everyone's dinner?"
"Yeah! Oh, the look on your Father's face when he took a mouthful!" Char snorted while giggling.

You two reminisced for hours, laughing at various things you two had done over the years.

Despite enjoying this last moment with Char, a debate was going on inside your head. Should you reveal your feelings to Char? No, you can't, couldn't. You don't know how he would take it, especially since he was leaving. Plus, what if he didn't feel the same? You sadly resolved to keep your feelings to yourself.

"Hey Y/N, are you alright? You've been a bit out of it for a while now." Char asked.
"Yeah, I'm fine. I'm just thinking about... everything." You half lied, since your feelings would be considered 'everything', just not something he knew about.
"I know..." Char said drooping. "But it's gonna be ok. We can write to each other like you said!" He finished, doing his best to perk up and smile at you.
"Yeah," You said, returning his smile.

You both sat in silence, rarity for you two, unless you were around your parents, when Char suddenly jumped.
"Oh!" He gasped, and began rummaging through his bag.
You looked at him, startled and confused.
"What's wrong?" You asked.
"I meant to give this to you for your Birthday, but since I...won't be here for that, you can have it now." He said, pulling out a heart shaped necklace with a blue gem in the middle.

You stared at it, tears forming in your eyes.

"Oh no, do you not like it? I'm sorry, Y/N I-"
"No, Char. I love it. I'm just upset that I don't have anything to give you." You said, looking down at the ground. Why didn't you think of getting Char something?!
"That's not true. You've given me friendship, despite our different positions in society. I was so lonely when I first came here, but you gave me a chance, accepted me and treated me fairly. It's my turn to do something nice for you. Besides, it's an early Birthday present! I know how much you love Birthdays!" He said, before holding out the necklace for you to take.

You took the necklace from him and put it on. You were going to treasure this, always.

"Thank you, Char." You said, pulling him into an embrace.

You then both heard noise coming from the other servant rooms.

"Looks like it's time for you to head back up to your room, Y/N. You don't want the Boss seeing you again." Char said, reluctantly pulling away.

"Yeah, I remember the last time she caught me. She's pretty scary for such a small snake." You said, giggling and slithering over to his door, Char following you, trying to stifle his own laughter.

Char opened the door for you and you slithered through and turned to face him.

"Goodbye, Char. I'll write as often as I can to you. And I'll take good care of the necklace."

"I'll write as much as I can too. Goodbye, Y/N."

Char then closed his door and you began your trek back up to your room, thankfully not meeting anybody along the way.

Hey everyone! Yes, I'm alive and I'm doing my best to finish this story. Updates will be slow, I think. Also, I drew a picture of Y/N and Char together that I will show when the story is finished as it has what I would consider spoilers for the end of this fanfic in it. I also drew some other characters from Ninjago which I think turned out pretty good!
Anyway, please let me know if I have made any mistakes in writing this!
