A couple days have passed since we shot the music video and the crew has wrapped and all left to go back to the US and Canada and Shawn and I are heading back to Toronto today. Shawn and Camila's team have posted the generic breakup message and the news cycle has since past. That is why we stayed in Spain a couple extra days to ride out the media storm.
I open my eyes with Shawn beside me still sleeping. I stretch and open my phone and see on Twitter Shawn is trending. I open to find a TMZ article with a large headline "SHAWN MENDES SPOTTED IN SPAIN KISSING A GUY" with a picture of us kissing on the beach a couple days after the music video shoot. I open the article and it goes on and on about only a few days after they publicly break up Shawn is spotted romantically with a guy who sources says is his longtime photographer Connor Brasier. They claim Shawn used Camila to coverup his sexuality and paint Shawn as the bad guy.
I audibly gasp which wakes up Shawn who is looking quite hot I just want to add. He stretches and leaned up to a sitting position next to me still keeping his naked lower half covered.
"Good morning baby! What's going on?" He asks
"Ummm look at this article they caught us kissing" I say as I hand him my phone.
"Oh shit I need to get my team on this right now" he reaches for his phone which is blown up with messages and missed calls. He dials Andrew his manager and they discuss. They go back and forth if they should put out a statement for a few moments. Shawn is pushing for privacy and saying it will blow over while his team is suggesting an interview or statement. A statement can be effective but in this case it might not be able to tell the whole story and answer a lot of questions people might have. Shawn suggests putting out a video statement that is more authentic and he can open up and explain the situation. His team agrees to the compromise and they try to tell him what to say before he shuts them down and says he is going to speak from his heart not a fabricated statement and he will send the team the video before he posts it on YouTube and social media.
"Well I had a feeling I wanted to keep this private but this might happen. I don't want to be the bad guy or make it seem like I used Camila when I didn't I truly cared about her." He says running his hands thru his messy morning curls.
"I know Shawn unfortunately it is very hard for people who don't go thru sexual identity trouble how hard it really is in todays society. They think it is so easy now because a lot of countries implemented gay right laws but that doesn't make it any easier when society still views you as a minority and not fitting to social norms. They bully you, harass you, and try to say you don't have the same rights as a straight person." I respond back passionately
"This is going to be hard to make as I have to be very careful navigating all these topics in a short response video." He says "I need to get ready and just record this so we can move on and get back to Canada." Shawn says as he climbs out of bed and heads to the bathroom naked to clean up and get dressed. I throw some clothes on too and start to setup a camera in the hotel room to record him.
After almost an hour Shawn emerges from the bathroom having showered, fixed his hair, and put on clothes mentally ready to speak from his heart.he is wearing a simple white teeshirt with a necklace.
