"is this gonna hurt?" y/n asked, leaning against a counter. she looked around the kitchen, seeing pots, pans, and other cooking supplies. there were plates and bowls which were unwashed stacked in the sink.

"no, silly! it's an arepa, my tia juileta makes them." dolores said, giggling. this was the first time y/n had seen her laugh, and quite frankly she was shocked. "we have to be quick, my abuela might come back." dolores whispered, her eyes going back snd fourth.

"oh. she's pretty aggressive, oh shoot! oh my god, i'm so sorry! i didn't mean to- uh- say that out loud! it was an acc-" y/n was cut off of her mumbling rampage as dolores shoved an arepa in her mouth.

"don't worry. i know." she smiled slightly as she went to wash her hands. "aye," dolores sighed, pressing her fingers to her temples.

"what's wrong?"

"mirabel forgot to do the dishes. it's reasonable though, she has so much on her shoulders. my abuela thinks she needs to do more work because she has no gift." dolores talked as y/n sat and ate the arepa. dolores began doing the dishes that the other madrigal hadn't done.

"dolores," y/n started. dolores turned around to face her. "is your gift ever, well, you know, challenging?"

"well, yes. sometimes i can't sleep." dolores said, laughing slightly.

"no, i mean. do you ever hear things you don't want to?" y/n asked again.

"ye-yes." dolores stuttered quietly. "sometimes, i wish i had a gift like isabela. people love her, and she's useful. nobody wants my gift. i don't help anyone." dolores said as she played with her red skirt.

"dolores. i'm sorry." dolores began to sniffle, hiding her face. y/n stepped closer to her, brushing her tear away.

suddenly, interrupting the sweet moment, mirabel's voice was heard in the distance, saying something about cracks in the walls....

y/n was rushed out of the house that night. more like pushed out by luisa.

"sorry!" luisa said, she put her hands on her hips. "so, what's going on with you and my cousin?" luisa asked as she raised one eyebrow.

"what?" y/n's e/c eyes widened at surprise. "does everybody know? well, i mean, nothing is going on."

luisa cackled, holding her stomach as she bent down hitting her knee.

"okay, this is just cruel!" y/n exclaimed, rolling her eyes at the stronger girl.

so camilo really wasn't lying. y/n thought to herself. oh my, she thinks about me? i'm hyperventilating!

"are you okay" the girl with the ponytail asked.

"yes." y/n said quickly as she ran through the small village and reached her home. she flopped down k
on her bed, and let out a large happy sigh.

"dolores thinks about me!" she squealed. "her family knows about me!" she let out a gasp of happiness. she grabbed a pillow, holding on to it tightly as she could. "oh shit. her family knows about me. her abuela knows about me!" y/n said, eyes widening. is that why she hated me so much?

suddenly, there was a tap on y/n's window. she peered outside, no one was around. she shrugged it off, thinking it was weird, but didn't make a big deal out of it. then there it was again. this time, it wasn't a single tap, it was three.

tap. tap. tap.

y/n stood in fear. she finally got the courage to open the window. and sitting on the small ledge was seven pieces of broken, green, glowing glass, and connected to one of the pieces of glass, a small section of a dull lime fabric.
