I woke up the next morning with a pounding in my head. My arm was throbbing, my stomach hurt since it was eating itself. I felt horrible, but safe. I was still in the room Ruby had put me in for the time being. I sat up and yawned, rubbing my eyes as I took a moment to fully wake up.

As I was sitting there, waiting for the grogginess to go away, I heard muffled voices coming from behind the door that led out of the room I was temporarily staying in. It sounded like a guy and a girl, and it also sounded like they were arguing.

I slowly got out of bed, my head rocking as I stood up and made my way over to the door. I leaned my ear up against the door and tried to listen to what was being said.

"You're not even listening to me, Marlon! What if that guy she was with is working with the raiders?"

"He's not, Brody. Besides, I took care of him, everything is alright. Just calm down."

"Don't tell me to calm down! If he was one of those raiders, they'll come looking for him. And they'll come looking here."

"Enough, Brody. I already told you what would happen if they did come knocking again. We're safe."

"I hope you're right."

I heard footsteps slowly fading away from the door. I had no idea what they were even talking about, but it sounded serious. What if the guys u was with months before this happened were coming after these guys? What if I had put them in danger? And what were they even going to do if they did come knocking again? These guys were strong and weren't afraid to kill anybody in their way.

The doorknob started rattling and unlocking, so I quickly went back over to the bed and sat down right as the door was opening.

I looked over to the entrance, and my stomach was immediately filled with butterflies.

It was that guy that had saved me from Henry yesterday. He was just so...perfect. He looked to be around my age, which was seventeen, I'm pretty sure. I stopped keeping track of my birthday as the years went by and the apocalypse was still happening, and there wasn't even really a way to celebrate.

"Morning." He said to me as he walked in, standing in the middle of the room as he looked at me, observing the bandage that was wrapped around my arm. "You feeling any better?" The guy asked me. I responded with a shrug.

"Well, besides the migraine and the throbbing in my arm, I guess so." I say to him, my eyes locking with his. I wanted to look away since it felt like I was staring into his soul, but I just couldn't. I didn't know what it was about this stranger, but it felt like I've known him forever.

"Right. I'll have Ruby give you some meds for that, if we have enough. In the meantime, I guess it's time to formally introduce myself. I'm Marlon." He says to me, giving a welcoming smile.

"Aubrey. It's nice to meet you, Marlon."

"You too. Although, I do wish this was under different circumstances." He says to me with a chuckle. "Come on, let me show you around."

I gave him a nod and stood back up from my bed. I followed him out of the room and into the halls of the building that I had learned was some type of school.
