Hunter and I walked through the woods, pine needles crunching under our boots. Wind rustled through the trees, and even though nothing was quite right with the world, it still felt like it was, in this moment here.
I spotted something shiny out of the corner of my eye, and crouched down to grab it. A little bead bracelet, gold and red, that some witchling had dropped.
Hunter gave me an odd look. "Do you just pick up anything you find on the forest floor?"
I smirked. "I found you on the forest floor, and now I've got my new favourite person."
His face flushed pink and they quickly looked away, and I could've sworn he let slip a giggle. Cute.
I stood back up and continued walking. "One time I went walking on this trail with Emira and I found a disembodied doll head in the dirt. That was pretty cool, but I dare say you're cooler."
Hunter frowned, but their face was blushed red. "Oh, shush," They laughed, shoving me away. I wrinkled my nose at him, shoving him back.
We walked down the path silently, nearly brushing shoulders at moments.
Suddenly, a beast demon crashed through the bushes behind us, startling me. It didn't come near us, continuing to dash through the underbrush, but Hunter looked positively terrified.
I put a hand on his shoulder to comfort him. "It was just a small demon, it's not gonna hurt us."
Hunter grabbed my arm and pulled me into a shrub.
"Wha-"
"Hush," he whispered, gazing through the leaves with a scared look in their eyes. "The Emperor's Coven is hunting that thing."
Sure enough, coven scouts appeared, chasing after the beast. We sat in eerie quiet, waiting until Hunter was completely certain the scouts had passed.
When we finally stood up and brushed thorns out of our clothes Hunter was still trembling.
"Hey," I said gently, "Let's go back home and watch a movie, okay?"
Hunter sighed, leaning into my shoulder. "Okay. Thanks, Ed."
Now was my turn to blush, heart twisted with love and pity for my darling Hunter.
