You could tell Sans was having a rough day as soon as you went into his room the next day. He tried to play it off that he was ok, but you knew better. "Papyrus?" He flinched. "... yes and no.. i... got hurt the most on this day." Sans explained. "cause it was the day i was created and my soul is strongest on this day." Your eyes widened. "Today... is your birthday?" He quirked a tired brow. "is that whatcha call it?" You nodded. "We do. Sans, can I ask who hurt you? We can bring justice for what happened to you and your brother." He shook his head. "probably won't matter anyways. he's gone." You sat beside your dear friend. "Alright.. well it could help you as well, talking about it." Sans shook his head immediately. "i would rather not.." He looked contemplative. "but... if you really want... i can show you.." He looked down at his shirt, then back to you. "but you have to trust me." You've trusted Sans for a long time. "Of course, who can you show me?" You asked. "soul synchronization." You went quiet. He went quiet. "As in.. the bonding experience for soul mates?" He blushed and nodded. You blushed as well. Well, then... you may or may not have been piecing a few things together. "Ok.. let's do it."

Mental illness was no joke. You learned that at a very young age when your mom was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Some days were really, really good! Other days.. weren't. Your mom would get really upset and yell. You didn't like those days. Your dad always told you that mom was just having a bad day, and things would get better. We just had to have patience. So you did what you could to help.

Sans was created in a lab by a very cruel skeleton whom likely had a horrible case of PTSD and psychopathy. That was not a good combination EVER. The scientist always did everything in his power to keep Sans and Papyrus in pristine condition. Healthy and fully functioning, but he was trying to make them STRONGER and that resulted in them both injured and scared. Especially when Sans first went feral. Papyrus was broken and unconscious, Sans had been very close to killing his brother that day, but the scientist got to him first. Whether that was good or bad.. it depended.

In school you were ignored and you honestly ignored them. You were learning all you could on the physical and mental illnesses of humans and how to treat them. You'd made up your mind to become a psychiatrist so that you could make your mom, and other people who were suffering, better and make a difference in the world. You were fully invested in your studies and not even the car crash could stop you from your goal. You did take a break to mourn the loss of your parents and heal, otherwise the accident only gave you more drive to complete your goal.

Sans was given daily doses of human determination to see if the scientist could tame this oldest experiment. It was no wonder Sans hadn't known Papyrus was dead, they were seperated and Sans was feral when the scientist gave Papyrus an experimental determination shot that killed him. The scientist showed no remorse for the youngest skeleton. As Sans had said, on his birthday, the scientist pumped his soul with determination and other unknown chemicals meant to make him stronger, apparently.

When you finally got your PhD your name spread quickly. You knew what you were doing and people loved you for it. You weren't doing it for the fame though, and they couldn't get that. They wanted you to lie and cheat for the television and that wouldn't do. You went to the mountain to get away from it all... and falling had been the best thing that happened to you. The monsters took mental illness seriously and you'd proven yourself quickly as a useful human... plus you met Sans. You were finally starting to realize just how important he was to you.

Sans finally snapped when the scientist tried to infuse an unstable power source into his soul. He attacked the scientist with his magic as the scientist was trying to transfer him from his kennel to a gurney. Sans kept attacking until the scientist lost his footing and fell into the magma pools. Sans ran and ran trying to find anything or anyone familiar. He was caught by monsters, and he was terrified and confused.. when they let him go he bolted, more scared than before. Then you found him and he felt... relief.
