i sit here,
tearing off pieces of my heart
like strips of paper
i hand these pieces to you.
they are yours to keep,
to tape back together
to use as protection
to keep you safe.
all i ask for in return
is that you don't crumple the pieces
and throw them to the floor
when you're finished with them.
