I awoke the next morning to a loud bang. I quickly sat up with my heart rate quicken in fear. I quickly calmed down when I saw it was just Nikki doing who knows what.

"Sorry." Nikki said when she saw I was awake, although she didn't offer any explanation on what she was doing.

I threw my blanket off and tossed my legs over the side of my cot. I stretched and got up fully. I dressed quickly in case anyone barged in. I pulled my green hoodie over my head and walked with Nikki to the mess hall for breakfast.

Once there we were greeted by Neil. I didn't see Max anywhere though and was about to sit down when Max appeared with two trays in his hand.

"I got the least questionable things Quartermaster made." Max said and handed me a tray.

I sat down and it took everything in me not to blush.

"So, what happened yesterday?" Nikki asked.

"Yeah, the two of you are all beat up." Neil chimed in.

Max and I looked at each other. I could tell he didn't want to tell them but knew I wouldn't say anything. I gave him a look to tell them so they would stop asking questions.

Max told them what happened but left out the part about me talking. I was grateful because I knew that would raise more questions.

Our 'breakfast' was interrupted by the annoying cheery voice of David.

"Good morning campers! Today we are taking a break from our normal camp activities." Everyone cheered. "Instead, there will be a major clean of the mess hall." Everyone booed. "Now, now, kids settle down. If you all work together it should be done in no time. Cameron Campbell is coming tomorrow, and I want this place to be spotless."

With that Gwen gave us all jobs. Nerris was to dust everything, Prestin and Dolf were to clean all the windows, Spacekid was to clean out the kitchen, Nurf was to clean out all clutter, Quartermaster was sweeping the floor, and my three friends and I were to scrub the floors. I think Ered was given a job, but I don't know what it is because she wasn't doing it.

"This totally sucks." Max said as we scrubbed the floor. "This is the kind of peasant work my parents left their home country to avoid."

"Yeah, I don't get the point. What good is rolling around on the floor if it's CLEAN?" Nikki says. I don't get her love of dirt so much. Don't get me wrong I'm not a clean freak or anything but I also prefer not to have dirt on me twenty-four-seven.

"This isn't even part of a sanctioned camp activity. This is child labor." Neil chimed in. Now that I agree with.

At that moment Ered walks past us. I notice she isn't doing whatever Gwen told her to do. She just leans up against the wall and flicks her hair out of her face. Does she really think that makes her cool?

"Man, Ered never gets yelled at for not working. She's just too cool. I wish I was her." Nikki tells us. I don't think she's all that cool but okay.

"Arid? Like a dry desert climate?" Neil asks confused. Oh boy Neil.

"I think her real name is Meredith, but she's so frickin' cool, she goes by the middle part of her name. Ooh, I wonder if I should try that. Ikk. Ooooh! Yeaah!" Nikki says happily. On no. I think 'Ikk' would be the worst nickname ever.

Max saw the look of horror on my face when she said that. "That's fucking stupid, nicknames don't make you cool."

"Pssh, spoken like a true first-part nicknamer." Nikki scoffs. Just because his name is Max doesn't mean it's a nickname. I knew a boy named John once and everyone thought it was short for Jonathon or Jonas or Johnson or something, but his name was just John.
