( SOFTLY WHISPERING. )
Peacefully, I lay Jeongyeon on my lap, her blonde short hair all tousled and messed up, black shadows under her eyes, and her lips chapped.
"Keep reading," she murmured between pressed-together lips, briefly opening her eyes and looking up at me as my lips curled into a smile. "Of course Bae." The book I held in one hand was geared more toward children, but it didn't stop us from reading in it every day - or at least I always read aloud in it every day for Jeongyeon, who otherwise couldn't sleep soundly.
I was meticulous about not talking too loudly or unclearly, not moving too much when her head was resting on my lap, and always running my hand through her thick hair, which was regularly cut short. While I felt this was an extreme shame, as I thought she was stunning in old pictures with long hair, in the end the decision was up to her, as she had to walk around with it and at the top of her list she had to be comfortable with it.
"Oh really? That's what Felix was saying? Christopher nodded his head vigorously." At a slow pace, the words rolled off my tongue as I twirled a blonde strand around my finger and briefly looked down at Jeongyeon, who was gradually calming under my touch and willing herself to finally fall asleep.
I continued to read sentence by sentence, barely making it through two pages, when I could already hear Jeongyeon's steady breathing, so I let the last sentence roll off my tongue before I quietly closed the book and put it aside, instead now completely fixating on the blonde girl in front of me, whose mouth was slightly open.
My hand ran over and over again through her hair or drew small circles on her soft skin, which were free of pimples. At the moment, however, new ones were starting to appear, which simply could not be avoided due to all the stress, as she took far too little time for herself.
Looking at the clock, I decided to wait a little longer to make sure that she had really fallen firmly into her dreamland, before I would also slowly get up to be able to pursue some quiet activities myself. After all, it wasn't too late yet, so there was still some time left to take advantage of, which I didn't want to throw away.
So when I was really sure, I slowly pushed her off my lap and rose from the comfortable couch before spreading the plaid folded blanket apart and carefully placing it over Jeongyeon before reducing my height and crouching down to be closer to her face.
"Sleep well, Bae," I whispered softly before pressing a quick kiss to her forehead and soon disappearing into the next room to give her some rest.
