"So, what's the story with you and the new chic?" I hear a voice ask me in mid-chew. Peter, David, and I turn around to see Sofie sitting down at our table. The entire cafeteria falls silent.
"Get a life people! Geez." She says and we all laugh.
"Good question though." David says and he turns to me, "Dude, start talking."
I roll my eyes. "I don't know."
"Really, that's all you have to say." Peter says and I shrug.
"Well, you're talkative today." Sophie jokes, clearly annoyed at my lack of gossip.
"Actually this is him being loud usually he just sits and stares at all of this," David says, jesturing to himself.
"Oh yeah, he's delicious." I answer, wiggling my eyebrows. They all laugh at me and David as he blows me a kiss.
"Peter!" Someone calls from over his shoulder and he turns around. I hear a sharp intake of breath from next to me and I look over to see Sofie as pale as a ghost. She looks horrified and it's not hard to tell why, Peter's tattoo is completely visible in all it's terrifying glory.
"I know hard to believe right?" David says, looking uncomfortable.
"He's not a Warper anymore though." I say hurriedly, trying to tell David to 1. Not freak her out and 2. Help me calm her down.
"Yeah, he was young and stupid and he's different now." He says obviously getting what I was trying to tell him. Sofie just nods.
"Really, he wants to get that removed." I say as Peter turns back around.
"So, what did I miss? Did lover boy here confess his feelings?" He asks.
"Only for me." David jokes. We all laugh except Sofie, who just smiles weakly.
"Hey," says Sam, while sitting down.
"What's shaking bacon?" David asks.
"I can think of several things to say to that but, none of them are good." Answers Sofie, some of her colour returning.
"We all can but, we don't say them." Sam says, then she looks at David. "Well, most of us don't anyway."
"Are you implying that I don't filter what comes out of my mouth!" David asks, pretending to be aghast.
"Yes." We all answer.
"Well then if that's what you really think of me, I'm leaving!" He says and walks away. We all know he's going to come back though so it's fine.
#####
"Do you think he got lost again?" Peter asks, because it's been around 10 minutes since David left.
"No. That only happened when he was new around here." Sam replies.
"I'll go look for him I guess," I say, already standing up to leave.
"'Kay." Answers Sofie, who already fits in with our group.
"No arguments or protests over my leaving? Do you not love me anymore?" I joke.
"Nope. I'm with Peter now." She says, hooking her arm through his pretending to be madly in love with the same guy who she was terrified of less than an hour ago.
"Fine!" I huff and storm out of the cafeteria yelling, "Watch your back Peter! I'll get you for this, I swear I will!"
Once I'm out in the hall I start with all of David's favourite places. He's in none of them so I look section by section until I see 'Lana' sitting on the floor and staring at a wall, obviously trying to convince herself none of this is real.
"Hey," I say, sitting next to her. She looks alarmed by my presence and also relieved that someone's here. She nods at me and goes back to looking at the wall.
"So, interesting choice of colour don't you think?" I ask, trying to start a conversation but she just shrugs. It is an interesting colour though, 1 of the people who founded the sanctuary thought that even though we're underground we shouldn't have gray or beige walls so they painted it sky blue. They meant for us to not be depressed by living underground but now it feels like they were just trying to rub it in.
"It's not all that bad." I say, trying to cheer her up. She just raises her eyebrows at me.
"Really! The people aren't so bad and there's a lot to do, if you want." This makes her eyebrows go up even further.
"Seriously, I could show you around if you want," I say, and she cocks an eyebrow and shrugs.
"Okay," I say and she smiles at me. This is the first time I've seen her smile and she's so beautiful when she smiles.
"Hey lovebirds!" David yells, walking down the hall towards us and Lana's smile slides into a grimace.
Where were you when I was looking for you? I ask, glaring at him.
Nowhere and everywhere my friend, he answers.
Cut the cryptic crap, David. I say, angry that whenever I look for him, he's not there, and when I'm finally getting somewhere with Lana he's all up in my face. David sits down between us and puts his arm around her shoulders.
"So what do you see in him? Is it his chiseled jaw? His broad shoulders? Or maybe the fact that he has neither of those?" David asks. Petting my dirty blond hair like a dog's. Lana's smile returns and I stop glaring at David.
"How's this going though?" He asks gesturing to Lana and I. She looks confused and shrugs.
"Wow, she's quite the conversationalist isn't she?" He jokes, while Lana catches my eye and rolls her eyes. David laughs at us and says, "It's like you guys have telepathy." He winks at me as Lana laughs akwardly, not quite getting the joke.
"We do." I say. "She's thinking you are a complete loser and you should get a life and stop bugging us." I say elbowing him and say, "Hint, hint." Now Lana bursts out laughing.
"I can see when I'm not wanted!" He says, huffing as he stands up and walks 2 steps then sits down again."So, what exactly do I tell the crew when they ask for gossip?" He asks.
"Tell them I'm madly in love with you and I was just telling Lana that I'm not interested in her, I only have eyes for you." I joke.
"Okay, so you love her more than ever and want to let me down easy." He pouts as he walks away.
"Lana-" I start to apologize for David's sense of humor but she cuts me off.
"It's Adaline." She says as she walks away.
