I must have a dopey look on my face because when I walk into the cafeteria Sam, Peter, David and Sofie surround me.
"So?" Asks David expecting me to elaborate, I just smile.
"Dude! She's got wrapped around her little finger, 2 times over!" Sofie says shaking her head. "Is it the mystery? You don't know her name, or where she comes from, or like, anything about her really."
David's jaw drops, "Wow, you're a frickin' genius! I didn't even think of that!" He exclaims, getting on his knees to bow to her.
"I know, I know." Sofie says.
"On your feet soldier." Lyanne commands as she walks over. David stands up and salutes her as he smiles sheepishly.
"What's the scoop with the new chick?" Lyanne asks, looking at Peter because he's our group's reporting officer.
"Just about to find out." He answers as he turns to me again.
Lyanne looks at me with a surprised expression on her face."Really," she raises her eyebrows. "I thought she would talk to one of them," she says, gesturing to Sofie. " Start talking kid."
I shrug. "Tell them the rest lover boy." Sam says as she nudges me. Sometimes I really hate having a friend that can read minds. "That really hurts me Jeremy." She says with a frown. Sofie just looks really confused.
"Sorry." I say to Sam.
"Anyway, " Lyanne says, rolling her eyes.
"Right, she talked." I tell them.
"Okay, but what did she say?" David asks, obviously trying to get some information from me.
"Does it matter?" I ask.
"Yes." They all answer.
I raise my hands in defeat. "Okay, okay."
"Are you going to tell us what she said or not?" Sofie asks.
Lyanne turns to her and says, "Since when are you an us? Are we just a story to tell your friends back home?"
"No." Sofie says but Lyanne interupts her.
"Or do you think we'll let you go if you pretend to be our friends? Are we as bad as you think we are?"
"No, I was only at the station because I was running away." She says so quickly Lyanne can't intterupt again.
"Oh, now I get it." She answers, as she walks away. I know she'll corner me later.
"What's to get!" Sofie yells after Lyanne. "I don't even get 'it'" she mutters.
"I never get 'it'. Is it something you can call dibs on?" David says, and to anyone who doesn't know him it would seem like he was kidding.
You're going to tell us later you know. Peter says.
Yeah , I know. I answer.
Good because we're not going to let this go, like ever. Sam says.
I figured as much. I answer.
I just can't believe that Sofie ran away. David says, changing the subject.
Yeah, but why is the question though.

"Okay, so we need someone on the inside-" David starts.
"Inside where?" Sofie asks.
"The Storm, duh. Anyway,"David says.
"Um, why do you need someone in the Storm?"
"Because they have someone inside the Sanctuary."
"Don't listen to him Sofie, he's completely insane." Peter interrupts, catching up to walk with us.
"I am not!" David argues. "This time I have proof."
"Oh yeah, what?" I ask.
Just as David is about to start, Sofie pulls us into a room and puts her finger to her lips.
"Sofie, look, I know you've got a thing for me but even I don't want to move this fast. Also why are they here?" David says gesturing to me and Peter.
"Shut up." She hisses, scowling at David.
She looks out the door and Peter and I are trying to figure out what's going on.
I'm telling you guys, she just wants me. You 2 should leave. David says when he finally figures out why we're gesturing to each other.
Keep dreaming buddy, keep dreaming. Peter tells him.
"Okay I think she's past, now go loverboy." She says, pushing me out the door.
"Wait, what?"
When I'm in the hall, I can see the back of Adaline's head and now I understand why Sofie pushed me out here. I look back and Sofie's making shooing motions with her hands, Peter's smiling and David is trying to push Peter out the door too. Well, until Sofie slaps him. I start running to catch-up.
"Hey," I say, panting a little bit.
She smiles at me and says, "Is that how you start every conversation?"
"No?"
Her smile widens, "Was that a question?"
"Um,"
"I'm joking, don't worry."
"Oh, okay. So how are you enjoying your stay?" I ask and her face falls, probably remembering that we did kidnap her. Nice, bring up the fact that you're the reason she was unconscious for 2 days why don't you? I mentally slap myself.
She shrugs. "It's okay, the only thing I miss about home is the night sky." She says, looking long fully at the cheery blue walls that don't provide any comfort for what she's missing. I frown, when suddenly I get an idea.
"Well, I can fix that." I say, walking a little faster. I turn down a few more hallways and stop at an old escape hatch that was once used for evacuations but now is just a way to keep some of us sane, and give the others a place to make-out.
I turn to her and say, "Promise you won't tell anyone?" She nods.
I turn and crank open the hatch. It makes a loud groaning sound and I wince and turn around to see if anyone is coming. Then I remember why this hatch is used instead of any of the others: the area around is rarely ever used and the ones who do use it don't care.
I start climbing up the chute. I can hear Adaline behind me. I turn the crank on the second hatch and it gives with a bit more effort because most people just make-out in the chute. I pull myself up onto the grass and reach down to help Adaline out.
Once she's on solid ground she looks up at the stars with a look of child-like wonder. We lay on our backs in the grass looking at the stars.
"Look at the size of the galaxy compared to us. Sometimes I wonder if what we do makes any significance at all." I say, wondering about the future. "Do you ever think like that?"
She doesn't answer and I look over and see tears rolling down her cheeks. I reach over and wipe one of them away and she holds my other hand in hers. I realize they're tears of joy so I don't say anything and go back to wondering.
