It was official. We had moved from Dakota to New York, and it sucked. It was loud, noisy and everyone was way too arrogant. Mum's also forcing us to meet the neighbours, they've got a son my age and he's 'perfect for me.' Hah.. yeah right.
"Hello! I'm Aberella McKenzie, this is my husband Cameron and our daughters, Raelynn and Michelle. We've just moved in, it's lovely to meet you." Mother smiled politely, sticking out her perfectly manicured hand for the woman to shake.
The woman smiled warmly at us, shaking Mother's and Father's hands before inviting us inside. We, and by we, I mean Mother and Father, accepted graciously, and stepped into the finely furnished and spacious house.
"Thomas! Marcus! Lillith! Come down please, we have guests!" The woman called, and a girl around Michelle's age daintily stepped down the stairs, followed by a guy my age and then a balding man. They all smiled, apart from the boy, who looked quite wary of us.
"I'm Martha Kensington, this is my husband Marcus and my son Thomas, who is seventeen, and my daughter Lillith, who has just turned fifteen." The woman, Martha smiled at us, and I nodded at all of them whilst my family greeted them warmly.
To say the least, I did not like this one itty bitty bit.
"The girl, her. She doesn't talk, why?" Lillith asked rudely, pointing at me as if I were some freak. I resented people like that, you can't just go around asking people why they're mute. Thomas glared at her, and Martha tutted.
"Mind your own business Lilly, if the McKenzie's want to tell us, they will." Marcus warned, and Lillith rolled her eyes, pulling a very fancy phone out of her pocket and texting someone on it. I don't care for electronic devices, I prefer books and the good old outdoors.
Thomas smiled at me, very briefly, before the neutral look I was so used to seeing on my own face when I looked at my reflection slipped back onto his face. I admired him, he was like me. But he probably talked, which was obvious because of what he said next.
"Will Raelynn and Michelle be attending the local college? Because me and my sister would gladly offer to help them settle, become friends and introduce them to others?" Thomas smiled, flashing his pearly white teeth. His mother beamed with pride, and our Mother nodded.
"They will be attending, and thankyou Thomas, you are a very generous boy." Father smiled, and I rolled my eyes, making a smile play on Thomas' lips. I'm guessing he caught it.
"It really is no problem Mr McKenzie, when you have a daughter as beautiful as Raelynn, she needs to be protected and kept from harms way at all times." Thomas smiled, and Father nodded, approving of him already.
This was foreign, very foreign.
My Mother smiled up at Thomas, who had to be at least six foot two, quite tall to my five foot six frame. I wasn't that good looking, but good looking enough to land a big time modelling jobs in magazines.
"Raelynn prefers Raely, and Michelle prefers Shelly. I thought you should know as their first friends, I want them to be as comfortable as possible." Mother smiled at both Kensington children, and they nodded.
"I prefer Tom, and Lillith, Lilly. Don't worry Mrs McKenzie, we will make them feel as comfortable as possible." Tom smiled, and Lilly nodded, a strange gleam in her eyes as she conversed with Michelle.
This was just way too new.. I need to get used to these customs if these are normal, and I need to adapt to them fast.
