I trotted slowly behind them as they walked ahead of me. I followed the worn down path and to the right of the camp. I don't know where they're going, but I don't question them. I just want this hunt to be over before I go mad because of Ice.
After a few minutes of walking, Ice and Thunder stopped at a meadow. It was green, and the grass was fresh from spring. I bent down my head and sniffed the ground. I could scent prey heavily here, but oddly, no wolf scent. Curious, I popped my head back up as they continued walking. I ran up to join them.
"Guys, where are we?" I asked. "I haven't been here before."
"It's my special hunting place. Every wolf goes here." Ice replied. I narrowed my eyes, suspituous. No wolf was here- not even her. There was no scent to prove she ever hunted here before in this meadow. And plus, there was absoulutly no tracks or trails in the grass, like there was in our territory.
Then it slowly dawned on me. This wasn't our territory!
I ran forward and blocked them from going any father. "Wait! This isn't even our territory!" Ice gave Thunder a glance, and Thunder shrugged, waiting for her to answer. I lifted up my eyebrows, also waiting.
Finally Ice admitted- although I wasn't sure if she was telling the truth. She told us, "It's not. But its not the other wolves' territory so we have a right to be here." She tried to slip past me, but I bared my teeth and blocked her.
"No, we don't have a right!" I barked. "It's not the Wood Pack's territory."
"Why do you care?" Ice snarled back. "You are just a stupid jump-wolf." I opened my eyes wide with shock that she just said that. A jump-wolf is a wolf that snarls and barks at the prey to scare it into the hunter's paws. That is their only job in the whole pack, and they are considered weak. I was no jump-wolf!
I bared my teeth and took a step towards her. "Take that back you flea-licker!"
"Guys!" Thunder barked. She growled and stepped between us. "Let's just go hunt without you two tearing open each other's neck." I glared and lifted my lip before whipping away from her. I saw out of the corner of my eye her tail go up in triumph. I rolled my eyes and started walking forward. Thunder did, too.
As soon as we spotted a good-sized deer, I took place behind a rock. The other two hid on the opposite side of the meadow, waiting for me to bark. But I wasn't going to do anything Ice says. I am taking this into my own paws.
I waited for the deer to put it's head back down into the grass. I crouched, and slowly crawled forward, hidden by the grass behind the deer. Hopefully Ice and Thunder would think I am getting ready, so they won't ruin this.
I crouched a few feet from the deer. It perked it's tail and ears up, sensing something. I shuffled my hind feet behind me, and my front feet right below me.
With a sudden burst, I launched myself upward. I snarled and jumped onto the back of the deer. It let out a feirce kick, trying to dislodge me. But I held on tight with my teeth, sinking them into it's neck.
Die.... die already, I thought.
I found it's spine, and snapped my teeth down. Then the buck dropped to the ground with a thud. I jumped off it's back as Ice and Thunder raced up to me, panting.
"What did you do?" Ice snarled. "That was my catch, Jay!"
I smiled. "Clearly not. I was the one to catch it."
Thunder wagged her tail. "Good job, Jay! Your first deer, and it's a big one!" I also wagged my tail, pleased with myself. I also was happy at the thought of finally beating Ice at something. I glanced at her, and she snarled and raised her hackles. But I ignored her. A weak fly like her was supposed to be ignored; brushed off like a fly.
