In a few days, the girls' dress orders were completed and were ready to be picked up. So, the girls go to town square to pick up their orders. Emmelina and Sabelina picked up their dresses, while Cinderella picked up her shoes and met them back at the seamstress's to pick up her dress.
When the girls got home, they decided to begin their competition to find who designed the best gown for the ball. So, they laid the dresses out on Katreena's bed for her to view them in all their glory. They wanted to have her judge the dresses as they were and determine a winner based on the dress itself. Then, the girls would go into the bedroom and put the dresses on and that is how Katreena would know which dress belonged to which of her girls. This was Cinderella's idea, because she wanted to ensure that Katreena judged the dresses fairly.
Cinderella laid out her elaborate blue and green gown on the bed, nearly taking up the entirety of the bed. To minimize the dress's size, Cinderella tucked the longer parts of the skirt underneath the dress, which decreased the space the dress occupied. Sabelina laid out her simple pink dress, and Emmelina laid out her orange and scarlet red dress next to Sabelina's. The girls then left the room and Katreena stepped into the bedroom to have a look at the dresses. She closed the door behind her so that the girls would not be able to spy on her as she was making her decision.
As she looked at the three dresses, Katreena already had a general idea of whose dress was whose based on the color. However, she assumed correctly that the large and more elaborate dress belonged to Cinderella, but she did not want to judge the dress by that fact alone. Katreena decided to judge the dresses based on which one she would personally want to wear if she were going to the ball. Although she intended to accompany the girls to the ball, she imagined herself to be in their shoes to choose the winning dress.
After spending a few minutes looking at the dresses in private, Katreena left the bedroom and allowed the girls to enter the room. She had chosen a winner, but as arranged she would not announce the winner until she saw the girls wearing their dresses. The girls went into Katreena's bedroom and changed into their dresses.
"Who do you think won the competition?" Emmelina asked, as she picked her dress up off the bed.
"Cinderella's won for sure." Sabelina replied under her breath. After all, Cinderella's dress was the most elaborate and cost the most money. There was no doubt in her mind that Cinderella's dress would at least place second if it did not win.
"Oh, do not say that." Cinderella said, trying to sound as selfless as she could, even though she did not truly mean what she said. "Your dresses look just as pretty as mine, and remember this is all just for fun."
The girls quickly changed into their gowns to present themselves to their mother. Of course, Cinderella had a harder time changing into her dress since her dress was the largest. Finally, all three girls had changed into their dresses and were ready to present themselves to Katreena for the announcement of the winner. So, one by one they emerged from Katreena's bedroom and entered the living room, where she sat waiting for them.
Katreena was sitting on a couch next to the fireplace. When the girls entered the room, she stood up to have a look at them wearing the dresses.
"Girls," Katreena said, blown away by her daughters' beauty "you all look beautiful. I had a very hard time choosing a favorite dress, but I think that the prettiest of all three dresses is Sabelina's with Cinderella's dress close behind hers."
Sabelina was so thrilled that she had won, even though there was no prize in store for the winner. At first, Cinderella had accepted defeat and was being a good sport, she wanted to show her mother that she had changed, but it was very difficult for Cinderella to contain herself. This pleased Katreena, as it showed her that Cinderella had indeed changed.
