The hotel room provided a chance for the smurfs to finally stretch. Brainy was sat on the window still, staring out at the River Thames. Gutsy, without quite realising it, was staring at the bespeckled smurf. He was seriously beginning to consider telling Brainy how he felt as it was getting harder and harder to ignore his feelings. Especially considering how cute the brainiac currently looked with the blanket burrito. Grace and Patrick exchanged knowing looks: the smurf obviously had a crush and they decided to try and give him a gentle nudge in the right direction. It was pretty obvious Brainy too had a crush but he was also clearly much more reserved about admitting his feelings than the prior.
"Gutsy, can we talk to you a sec?" Grace asked.
"Sure," Gutsy agreed, confused. The other smurfs looked confused too but as a subtle explanation. They all grinned – except Grouchy – in understanding. Maybe this would finally be what got the two together. They headed into their bedroom connected to the family suite, closing the door behind them.
"Guessing this is something important?" Gutsy guessed, sitting on the edge of the counter.
"Pretty important," Grace said. "It's about you and Brainy."
"Oh not you too," he groaned, burying his face in his hands. "Look I can't just tell him!"
"Why not?" Patrick asked. "You obviously like him."
"For one I don't want to risk him saying no," he replied, crossing his arms defensively over his chest. "And two..." He blushed slightly. "Brainy is way too good for me. He is completely out of my league."
"You know...I used to – and still kind of do – think that Grace was out of my league. It took me forever to ask her out," Patrick mused with a sheepish grin.
"Really?" Gutsy asked in surprise.
"Oh definitely," Patrick said, bemused."I met Grace at college," Patrick begins. "She was taking Law but we met as we both took an Open Module. I had seen her around but when I got to know her..." He let out a contented sigh. "Well I very quickly developed a crush. I didn't think she would be interested though: she had it all together and was just perfect."
"Of course I did like him back," Grace said, rolling her eyes slightly. "But I didn't say for the same reason."
"It took me ages to tell her I liked her," Patrick continued. "A year actually. At least we were friends though. I just wish I had told her sooner though. It would have saved me a lot of worrying about it and that would mean we could have spent longer together."
"Awh," Gutsy said. "But was there a point to that?"
"Yes," Patrick said. "The point is, even if you are doubting it, odds are he would like you back."
"Plus, even if he didn't, wouldn't knowing be better?" Grace asked. "Then you wouldn't have to keep over thinking it."
"I suppose that's a good point," Gutsy mused. He sighed. "Okay. Yeah. I'll let him know."He headed back to where the smurfs were.
"Interesting conversation?" Star asked, grinning slightly, hoping Patrick and Grace had talked some sense into him."
"Pretty interesting," he said. "The rest of you clear off. Now." The smurfs exchanged triumphant looks and headed out.
"Good luck," Star said.
"Thanks..." Gutsy said. "If any of you eavesdrop I will hurt you." The serious expression during the threat made the other smurfs actually listen otherwise they very much would have.Once the door was closed he climbed up to the windowsill where Brainy was daydreaming, still staring out of the window. To break him out of it he gently nudged the brainiac.
"Hm?" he asked, tilting his head slightly.
"Um...I wanted to ask you something," Gutsy said, fiddling with a loose thread. "Well tell you something, actually. Or both."
"Is something wrong?" Brainy asked in concern. "You look really worried."
"Ah...No nothing is wrong," Gutsy said, trying to figure out why this was so difficult. "I... Promise you won't freak out?"
"Um...I'll try," Brainy said.
"Good enough." Gutsy took a deep breath, making eye contact with the other smurf. "I like you. Um...not in a friend way. Well, yes in a friend way but not. Agh, okay, I am not explaining this well. Okay. I have a crush on you. A big one. I have for a while." He tried to read the smart smurf's expression, anxiously waiting for a response. Brainy looked stunned, almost frozen, turning over Gutsy's confession over in his head. "Oh smurf, that was a bad thing." Brainy held up one finger, trying to make sure coherent words come out."Not a bad thing, just surprising," he finally gets out, voice quiet. He didn't understand why Gutsy liked him or why the other smurf had such 'low standards' but he was happy. Properly happy. More happy than he had been for an extremely long time. "Sorry...word issues. Um...Okay..." He stared at the floor, wishing he could hide before making the next statement. "I like you too. I just never said because..." His voice trailed off. "Um.. this isn't a prank, right? Because you are way out of my league!"
"I'm out of your league?" Gutsy asked, incredulously. "Pretty sure it is the other way round, Brainy." He quickly changed the subject before he could protest. "Does that mean when we get back home I can take you on a date?"
"Um.." Brainy blushed. "If you want to?"
"I do want to." Both where now incredibly embarrassed but were exchanging small smiles. "I had better let the others come back in."
"Kay..." Brainy agreed, almost disappointed. Gutsy gave Brainy's hand a squeeze and called the others.Almost immediately the others burst in.
"Well?" Grouch asked, bordering on enthusiasm. Realising they very much knew, Brainy buried his face in his hands: that very much gave the answer away.
"Told you both so!" Star exclaimed, triumphantly. The two smurfs gave her deadpan expressions, Brainy trying to not blush again. "What? I did. For ages!" Brainy returned to burying his face in his hands, wishing the ground would swallow him up. Gutsy wrapped an arm around the brainiac in a protective hug. He shot Star a glare. "Okay, okay, sorry. Place and time..."
"Very much so," Gutsy agreed. He tightened the hug slightly: that didn't help with how embarrassed he felt but it did amplify the happiness and the extreme sense of security and safety it created.Soon – too soon for the new couple – it was time to head to sleep. Before long Brainy had dropped off in the corner of the sofa without a blanket. Gutsy picked one up and gently wrapped it around his shoulders, smiling slightly. He stayed up later than planned, turning over possible date ideas in his mind.
-------------------------------"Okay, I've booked myself a ticket for Gargamel's show this afternoon," Grace announced whilst everyone was eating breakfast. "That way we can follow him to see which hotel he is staying in. Patrick, you can stay with Blue. We don't want to risk Gargamel recognising you."
"Fair enough," he agreed: by now they knew that the two were now together. If they had it their way they would organize a date for the duo so it was unfortunate they were magical creatures that stood out and they were currently in the process of a rescue mission. "Okay, once you know should we do the room service plan since last time was disastrous."
"If I can get in the locker room," Grace agreed. "And maybe you could do something fun with Blue? There is the Natural History Museum?" Patrick nodded. "Alright guys, I'll go buy a bigger bag so you have more room."
"You don't have to do that, Grace," Clumsy said, tripping as he tried to stand up.
"It is mo problem," she said. "I don't want you guys too cramped. You may want to get stuff you need for the rescue." They all nodded and started scanning the bags to see possible supplies that could be useful besides Brainy's magic.
