So the first part of the AU is up. This begins as an alternate ending of Chapter 6: what if something had happened so Brainy's plan to leave and take the potion couldn't happen. A brief recap of what has happened so far: Brainy is absolutely miserable and barely himself anymore. He has no friends, although Gutsy is being persistently nice, and when he was captured by Gargamel and his creation Star no one believed him. He was planning on using the Unsmurf formula and had just been removed as Papa's apprentice.
The thoughts slamming their relentless force through Brainy's mind made him hesitate to return to his mushroom. There was the feeling of a hot poker in his chest and it seemed to be becoming hotter and hotter. The anger was almost its own living entity and Brainy was worried if he wasn't alone somewhere calm, and fast, it would erupt. His mushroom was alone but it long since stopped being calm. Not since he had began to gather putting all the ingredients together. Not since there were days where he could barely bring himself to get out of bed and would spend the whole day staring at the ceiling, fists clenched until the knuckles were a much paler blue and his nails had left indents in his palms. He didn't want to spend what might well be his last day in the village doing that.
Brainy went to a quiet creek that he was almost certain no smurf else knew about. He always came here when he wanted to be outside but he needed to be alone. No one wanted his company and he did not want anysmurf's. He sat down next to the water, his hand dipping the surface slightly and sending ripples across the perfectly clear surface. Some cold began to creep up his fingers but he ignored it. He needed to leave, he knew it, but there was still a strong unease about using the Unsmurf Formula. What if it didn't work? Disaster. What if it killed him? Probably a good thing. A leaf from a tree above him fell down, brushing his shoulder before landing in the water. Again he watched the ripples. It was funny, in a way, how such a small thing would cause an impact and one that was so satisfying to watch. What kind of impact did he have? Being the village headache. Being hated. The thoughts made the red hot anger increase to the point that it was almost painful. He tried to take calming breaths and focus on the sounds of the breeze rustling the leaves to little avail.
It wasn't fair. It was never fair. It never would be fair. He tried to change so smurfs would stop hating him, it didn't work. He got captured by Gargamel, nosmurf believed him. Brainy was so tired, so drained, of everyone's bullsmurf. Ripping his emotions from everything, being as cold hearted as Gargamel had wanted Smurfette to be, couldn't be the wrong way forward. The only reason he had to stay – being Papa's apprentice – had been ruined like everything else. If he stayed then he would probably do something arguably worse than making sure he can't feel emotions.
He'd miss Gutsy though, even though the other smurf had long since started to be an enigma. Maybe that was why he would miss him? The fact that for some unknown reason Gutsy was nice to him these days? He didn't understand though. He didn't deserve it and nosmurf else was. It was probably just pity...but that didn't mean he didn't sometimes try to pretend otherwise.
The numbness from the water was no longer contained to his hand and was creeping up his entire arm. Brainy glanced down at the water and frowned at seeing his reflection, striking the water and letting ripples hide him completely. He struggled to bite back tears; for smurfs sake, the last thing he wanted was to run into somesmurf, namely Hefty, who would have yet another thing to make fun of. He was not going to miss Hefty.
He stayed sitting there until the sun began to sink. The pink light was soft and gentle, casting the water in a soft warm glow. Brainy sighed. It was time to go. He wandered back to the village, keeping his head down and avoiding every smurf who was getting ready to head to dinner. There was no chance that he was going. Not after his argument with Papa. Besides, like most days, he wasn't hungry.
He opened the door, making sure to lock it behind him, then froze.
No. No, no, no! Where was his stuff? His potion stuff? Everything?! In one instant Brainy saw not only one of his favourite things to do be taken away but also his escape.
"Papa..." he muttered. He wasn't an apprentice anymore and when he wasn't here...He picked up his pillow and screamed into it. He could feel his voice growing hoarse and throat sore but he kept screaming. He saw the note from Papa, explaining that he didn't need the stuff anymore so he was putting the equipment back in his own lab, and crumpled it up into a tight bar. He screamed again, tears soaking the fabric and he visibly shaked from the force of his emotions."Now what?" he whispered to himself, hoping talking things out would help him find a solution. It didn't. Things were now a mess but there was one simple fact that burnt its way through him. He was stuck here.
The bluntness caused the tears to stop and he became almost completely numb. He simply went to his bed and lay on it, staring at the ceiling. Things were never going to change.
-----------------------------------------Gutsy headed to Brainy's mushroom, hesitating by the door. There was so much he wanted to say to the bespeckled smurf. Already everysmurf knew about his argument with Papa and he wanted to say that he thought Brainy was right to stand up for himself. He wanted to say he believed him about his escape from Gargamel and everysmurf was wrong on how they were reacting to a very real, very likely, threat. There was so much to say but every time he didn't. He raised his hand to knock then sighed, letting his hand drop, having no idea how to word all of this and he didn't want to mess up. He slowly walked away, looking back at the closed door. Maybe next time.
