Luca POV

"Absolutely not." Alberto half yelled.

It was the next day and things were already becoming conflicted. After the fiasco on the ship, Alberto's mood was a touch more sour than usual.

"Don't be difficult. The council wants to meet with us again this morning, and Luca can't be present for that." Eshe huffed with the air of talking to an unruly child.

"Forget it. I won't leave him alone again." Alberto said stubbornly.

Luca looked from his mate to Eshe nervously. He hated being in the center of these conflicts.

"I'll stay with him." Ksenya piped up from the corner.

Luca looked at her. So did Alberto, but skeptically.

"No offense, you've been nice, and all, but most Rusalki are much bigger than you both," Alberto said.

"They won't dare approach me," Ksenya said with so much confidence. Luca raised his brows in surprise.

"She is right," Eshe confirmed. "Nobody will dare approach Luca if Ksenya is with him. I've made sure of it."

Alberto looked at his sister, then turned to Luca.

"Are you ok with this? Because if you say the word, I won't go," He said, his eyes worried.

Luca did feel his stomach tighten in fear at the thought of Alberto leaving. But their cause was more important. And he trusted Eshe's judgment. If she said it would be safe, then it was fine.

"I'll be ok," Luca said reassuringly.

Alberto took his hand and placed it on his chest.

"If anything even mildly looks wrong, promise you'll call out to me."

Luca knew he didn't mean to literally call out. But to reach through their Bond.

"I promise," Luca said.

Then he caught Ksenya eyeing them with a quizzical expression, and he quickly took his hand from Alberto's chest.

"Let's get going then," Eshe said impatiently. Alberto gave him one final look before following after his sister.

Luca was left alone with Ksenya, still staring at him.

"Um..." Luca said awkwardly. "He and I are childhood friends." He said, trying to address what just happened without being suspicious.

"Mhm," Ksenya said but luckily changed the subject. "Let's go."

"Where are we going?" Luca said, following her out of their stone shelter.

"I want to show you the center square in the daylight."

They swam the length of the seagrass fields, side by side, not saying much. Luca could feel Ksenya analyzing him, but he kept his silence. Not that he didn't want to talk to her. He had hundreds of questions, mostly about her relationship with Eshe. But it was far too delicate of a subject to bring up randomly.
