Y/n has spent hours getting ready. It started with a thorough shower, followed by a long skincare routine, the meticulous application of her makeup, doing her hair just right, and finally picking out the perfect outfit for this evening.
Today is a particularly exciting day, the first of its kind within their relationship. Valentine's Day. Although she insisted they keep the day simple and sweet, Vinnie has been determined to make it as exuberant as possible.
He booked a reservation to a high end restaurant weeks in advance and spent hours planning the evening to be full of good food, flowers, sweets and walks on the beach.
And all that is fine but what he's really excited about is something extra special that he's been working on for months now - a promise ring. Custom made, in just the style he knows she likes.
To him, this isn't a promise ring in the way of it being just some piece jewelry he's giving his girlfriend. To him, this is a promise. It's promise of his commitment to her, a promise of his undying love, his willingness to sacrifice for her. His promise to always build her up and to never let her down. It's his promise that one day he's going to marry her and he's taking this ceremony with as much seriousness as he'd take a marriage proposal to her.
With all of this in mind and nervous hands, he reaches for the door handle, turning it slowly. "You ready, baby?" he asks, peaking into the room.
His breath catches in his throat when he sees her. He knew she'd look amazing today but she looks beautiful beyond words. He can't hold back his smile as he stands in the doorway, watching her as she finishes getting ready.
"Almost," she says, fixing her earrings in the mirror.
She catches his gaze and the look on his face makes her blush. Butterflies fill her stomach and she turns to look at him, smiling sweetly.
"What?" She asks.
He walks over to her, holding his hand out. "I'm just thinking about how lucky I am."
She takes his hand and stands, allowing herself to be pulled into his embrace. This is her favorite place in the world, completely safe from all the bad things and bad people. It's what she lives for. It's what gets her out of bed in the mornings and soothes her when she's upset.
"Mmm, I think I'm the lucky one," she says softly.
This moment feels sweet and his heart starts to beat a little faster, wondering if this would be the best time to give her the ring. He has planned on waiting until the beach but right now feels natural. After all, isn't the mood more important than the setting?
He goes back and forth with himself for a second before deciding that now is as good a time as ever. With a deep breath, he takes a step back from her. His face flushes almost red from his nervousness as he reaches into his pocket and pulls out the ring case.
As soon as she notices it she freezes, waiting to see what he does. Waiting to see if he's about to do what she thinks he's about to do. It all feels like slow motion and she even gets lightheaded while trying to do her best to hold it together but then he starts to get down on one knee.
She gasps and puts her hand over her mouth, shaking her head. "Vinnie, no! I love you but we can't get married yet! We're too young, we still have to get our lives figure out and -"
"I'm not proposing," he says calmly.
"Oh," she says, dropping her hands to her aides.
His head dips down and he starts to laugh, making her blush and feel embarrassed that she assumed and nearly made a scene but his laugh is contagious and her embarrassment quickly turns to amusement.
"Well, what on earth are you doing then?" She asks.
He gathers himself and takes a deep breath. "I wanna give you something," he smiles.
"It that a ring?" She questions the box in his hands.
"Not just any ring," he opens it as his demeanor turns sincere. "It's a promise ring. I want you to know how much I love you and how much you mean to me. I'd do absolutely anything for you, Y/n. And one day... not today," he laughs lightly. "But day, I will make you my wife. And this is my promise of that, and my promise that I'm committed to you through anything that life might throw at us. It's my promise that I've got your back always and forever. My beautiful girl, will you accept it?"
Tears well up in her eyes instantly. That feeling of safety and love she felt for him while in his arms a few moments ago turns to something far more powerful.
Of course she loved him before but hearing him say this to her and show his commitment just lit her soul on fire, ingraining in her the full realization that this man is her soulmate. He's who she belongs with, she's sure of it now more than ever.
The love she feels for him is no longer a puppy dog or a cupcake type of love - it's a fervent love, so intense it could burn a forest down and so deep it puts the ocean to shame. It's indescribable, really.
"Vinnie..." she carefully wipes the tears off her cheeks. "This is the sweetest -" her sentence breaks off, unable to speak without crying. Instead of fighting through the tears, she just takes a deep breath and nods her head. "Yes."
He grins, holding back his own tears and he shifts a little, trying his best to contain his excitement and keep himself from literally sweeping her off her feet. She holds her hand out and he puts the ring on her finger and then he lays a soft kiss to it.
"I love you, baby," he says, standing up and wrapping his arms around her waist.
"I love you too," she sniffles. "And all I got you was a picture collage of us and a damn gift card," she frowns.
He shakes his head, kissing her. "Baby, your collage meant so much to me, you have no idea. And I know it took you forever to make and it came from your heart. I love it, please don't feel like it's not enough."
She smiles and nods. "Well I'm still gonna have to step it up next year."
"I'll take that as a challenge," he chuckles.
"Okay," she smiles. "I challenge you to a competition of love. We'll see who does it better."
"Alright... but you better bring your A game, baby. If you think this was romantic, just wait until next year," he laughs.
She giggles and looks back down at the ring, holding it out to admire it.
"You sure you don't wanna go ahead and propose to me?" She teases.
He laughs. "Give it time, my love. I promise that day will come."
