Alex woke with a start. Her alarm clock blaring. She felt clammy and sticky with sweat. She reached over and slammed the snooze button, finding that her hand was trembling.
She took a few breaths to calm down. Her nightmare still fresh in her mind. She could only remember parts of it now. She was running through and alley, and suddenly felt pain.
She shook her head to clear it of the clinging remnants of her nightmare. She got out of bed, her heart rate slowing back to normal.
She glanced at the clock, the sleep immediately leaving her body when she saw it read 7:30. She got ready quickly, grabbing her bookbag. She ran downstairs, and out the doors, deciding to skip breakfast.
She ran down the sidewalk, hurdling toward the school, which was only a few blocks away. She glanced at her watch as she skidded to a halt at the doors to the school. It read 7:50. She sighed with releif and walked into the school, still breathing heavily.
She slipped into the crowd of kids heading for the stairwell. "Hey Hawk!" A voice called from right next to her. She snapped her head towards the noise, finding it was only her friend Mack.
"Hey." Alex answered, smiling. Mack was a tall slender girl with long dirty blonde hair, like her own, and brilliant blue eyes. She had given Alex the nickname Hawk at the beginning of the year, because at that time, Alex was quiet and observant.
"Did you hear?" Mack asked, her eyes flickering with excitement. Alex couldn't help but smile wider at her friend's excitement. Even though they were in their first year of high school, she still had the attention span and smile of a 3rd grader.
"We're taking a trip to downtown Minneapolis." She said. Alex had been to downtown Minneapolis many times, but it didn't take away from the excitement and bustle that Alex loved so dearly.
She had lived there a few times, when she was assigned a new foster family, but she hadn't lived there for more than a year. Now she lived in Anoka, a town in the outskirts of Minneapolis.
"Awesome!" Alex said, as they climbed the stairs toward their first period.
Suddenly, someone tripped her, making her land on her knees, just barely keeping herself from landing on her face. She heard a laugh and then footsteps as the ran off.
Mack offered Alex her hand, pulling her up. "I am going to destroy those kids when I find them!" She growls. Alex turned in the direction of the kids, scowling. "Not if I find them first." She says, brushing dirt off of her jeans.
Alex and Mack walked the rest of the way to their classroom, finding two seats close to each other.
"Good morning class." Their teacher said with a cheerful smile. "I'm sure you all heard we will be taking a trip to downtown Minneapolis." She took a stack of papers from her desk and went around the room, handing each of us one.
"This is the permission form for the trip. If you expect to go, you have to bring these back sighned by Friday." She said, returning to her desk. Alex glances at the form and shoves it into her book bag.
After class, Alex and Mack make their way toward their lockers, laughing and chatting. As they reach their lockers, A boy with a mop of blonde hair almost covering his eyes, pushed Alex against the lockers. Alex cried out with pain as her face slammed against the cold metal.
Her back suddenly felt a lot lighter and realized he took her backpack. She screamed with anger, spinning to face him. He was rummaging through her backpack. She swung out her fist, hitting him in the stomach, causing him to jump away from her backpack.
She grabbed it and Closed the zipper, after breifly making sure everthing was there.
She wanted to curse him out so badly, but restrained herself. She helped Mack up, who had apparently been knocked down. Her face was red with anger. "Come on." Alex whispered, tugging her toward her next class.
She had been regularly harrased by several people ever since she had started at this school at the beginning of the year. She had learned to ignore it, but today she snapped. She was still tense from her nightmares, which had been reoccurring for the past few days.
Alex sighed and entered her next class.

After school, she walked home alone. Mack had gotten picked up by early for a dentist appointment, saying she would text her when she was finished. Alex stopped at the door to her foster home. Her family was nice, but they weren't her family. She mainly avoided them, and didn't talk much when was with them.
She opened the door and ran up the stairs, closing the door to her room. She kicked off her shoes and layed down on her bed. She didn't mean to fall asleep, but when she woke up, her alarm was beeping again.
This was the first night that week where she slept soundly. She walked into the bathroom to brush her teeth. She starred at her reflection in the mirror and sighed. She was an average height, with black glasses and straight, dirty blonde hair that reached past her shoulders.
She looked exactly like her parents. She had her mother's green eyes and blonde hair, and her father's nose and smile.
Both of her parents were collage professors. They were smart and kind. Exactly three years earlier, they were returning home from work, when they were approached by an armed assailant. They were kidnapped and killed, but the bodies were never found. Ever since then, she could barely breath if she looked in the mirror to long.
She finished getting ready, swallowing the lump in her throat.
