The following day, Alex's math teacher reminded everyone that the field trip to Minneapolis was going to be on Wednesday. Alex grabbed her stuff and left the classroom, stopping by her locker before lunch. "Hey." A voice behind her said. Alex jumped, turning to see it was Mark.
"Don't sneak up on me again or I might punch you on accident." Alex said, remembering her fight with Zach. "Sorry." He said with a smirk. Alex smiled, rolling her eyes. She closed her locker and leaned against it. "What do you want." She asked. "I just wanted to say hello." He said raising his hands in defense.
"Alright, hello." Alex said with a smirk. Just then Mack and Chase came toward them, stopping when they saw Mark. He looked surprised and angry to see him. Alex looked between them. "Do you know Mark?" She asked. "We crossed paths a few times..." Chase answered.
Mark seemed to ignore Chase's cold glare and gave them a smile, but only Mack returned it, followed by, "Hi! I'm Mack." Alex glanced at Chase. She could detect a barely noticeable scowl forming on his face. What's his problem? Alex turned back to Mark and Mack, brushing the thought to the back of her mind. She would ask him later.

The bell rang signaling it was lunch time. Alex grabbed Chase's arm, letting everyone pass them. "You coming?" Mack asked. "Uh, you go ahead, we'll catch up." Alex said. Mack glanced at Alex's hand, which was still on Chase's arm. Alex blushed, quickly drawing her hand away.
Mack shrugged. "Okay. Don't take to long." With that, Mack and Mark departed, leaving Alex and Chase alone in the hallway. "What's wrong?' Alex asked, turning to Chase. "What do you mean?" Chase said, looking down on the floor.
"You're not a very good liar." Alex said with a smirk. Chase sighed, looking up so their eyes met. Alex raised her eyebrow expectantly. "I don't trust that Mark guy." He said with a scowl.
Alex looked at him with disbelief. "What do you mean you don't trust him, you just met him!" Chase just shrugged. Alex rolled her eyes. "Whatever." Chase looked at her. "I just think you should be careful." He said, and with that he walked away. Alex just stared after him.
What did he mean by "be careful"? About what? Alex pushed the thoughts to the back of her mind, walking to the cafeteria.

Mack was chattering away, Mark only half listening. Chase was sitting in the farthest spot away from Mark, but close enough so he could hear Mack. When Alex sat down next to Mack, she stopped talking.
"What took you so long?" She asked. Alex glanced at Chase, who didn't meet her gaze. "Nothing, I just had to put something in my locker." Alex said with a smile.
